Good Buddies

#1

Post by LDW47 »

I recently bought this red Tasco 9vr from a gentleman from Texas for my wife so that she can try and compete with my Cometron C62, both are from the mid 80’s and both have Vixen optics ! It will be fun using them under the black, black skies at our remote camp under Bortle 1 skies but I hope it doesn’t cause one of us to not talk to the winner, lol ! And by the way I called it Isobel after her, lol ! Clear Skies !

The Tasco is a 60mm f/5 and the Cometron is 62mm f/4.84?
An interesting pair of refractors, I hope they both work well :)

Hi LDW. A very nice pair of refractor telescopes there. I have both a 120 and 150 refractor telescopes and enjoy them very much. I hope that you and Isobel enjoy these telescopes greatly in your Bortle 1 skies. Thanks for your post and photo LDW, and the very best of regards.

So far the low power, wide field views are very sharp with my 1.25” eps !

After saying all of this I have grown to love these very small refractors in the last year and how they function and the challenges getting their peak performance to show. My much larger and better quality scopes are taking a back seat to these solid performers and I love every minute !

Very nice pair of scopes. Good luck with the competition! :)

Bortle 1, yeah I am a bit jealous too. Though admittedly, our other house (dark site) is typically B3 and at times as good as B2. I think the very best SQM-L I have gotten is about 21.7 IIRC. That's not bad for the eastern half of the US by any means, though typically it runs about 21.3 to 21.5. It most certainly could be worse! At home I have never gotten above 19.8 and that is a rarity nowadays with the light creep we are experiencing.

Would love to hear about your observing successes with these mighty-mites from a Bortle 1 sky. Probably M101 and M33 are easy objects with some visible detail. Was able to see a spiral arm of M33 and the Horsehead with my 15x70 binos a few years back from a Bortle 1 spot. After that I was spoiled and could never regard my Bortle 6-7 skies at home with anything but disdain.

Down and to the left of center, about 1/3 way down the tree and to the right. Dang! Now I'm really itching to get back to a dark(er) site.

A 15 sec.pic with my p’n’s doesn’t begin to show it like your naked eye but it is the only way to show something like what we see year after year. We are blessed ! Clear skies !
