Yep, took me only 4 years to get there. More importantly the topic of the thread is

Thanks! It does look remarkably civil. As for stupidity and malice.... ;)

My rule is a combo of two:
1) never attribute to malice what can be attributed to stupidity
2) three times and "YOU'RE OUTTA HERE!"

so on the third incident..... ;)

I've gotten to the point where I can't stomach reading beyond the first few posts of any given topic on CN. Waste of time and just aggravates me. But then again, I've quit watching any sort of news program on TV - national or local - so maybe I too am getting cranky in my old age.

Hello Andrey,

a similar situation is also on other astro forums, at some point you should stop reading. There are always some people feeling they must comment on any subject.
Just pick up what you need, and ignore the rest,

I know guys, enter at your own risk. I mostly go on CN for classifieds and was looking at the EPs selection (what else? :D) when the topic caught my eye in the highlights. I know post like that will end up bad, but you can't help but look.

I remember speaking to David Malin about his experiences when he was using photo plates at the prime focus of the (then) Anglo-Australian Telescope at Siding Springs (4 metre class). He said he was sitting in the prime focus cage, and used a jeweller's loupe to have a look... Probably beat my 4" APO. ;)

Well, to be fair, at the time I looked in there were several posts after Bigzmey's. All of them were mild. If there were fireworks I missed them. Sorry, I know I'm no fun at all.

HOIWEVER, my conspiracy theory is that although Bigzmey has a different user name over at Tartarus, he uses the same avatar. So maybe CN's Big Brother got bent that he posted a link here about a thread there?!

From what I saw it seems that the topic starter was not interested in genuine answers but was just trying to start a fight. Surprisingly, all replies were civil and on topic. Since he was not getting what he wanted his replies became inflammatory and at that point he was reported and possibly banned. I applaud CN moderates, but wish it would happen more often. :D

Yes definitely!
I do like the amount of information that is available over there but the attitude keeps me away now other than to maybe ask Mr. Pensack or Mr. Paolini a question.

The forums are platforms for exchange (of ...)
They have their sociology structure with the participants having different intentions, ...

In one of the German forums there is an ongoing discussion about the 15x-something binoculars, this discussion will last over the next 10 years,
or even more, my guess.
You would not believe, how heated this discussion is developing, because just one of the guys must comment on everything, believing to know everything better.
