What could this $2500 used 80/1200 achromatic refractor do, that my 150/1200 achromatic refractor with a 80mm aperture mask cant do? I got the Yard Canon used for $250. Just curious. Left click the image.

Well.....

It's a Zeiss objective but NOT a Zeiss OTA so the optical surfaces are very likely more precise. If both scopes are properly collimated the Zeiss would have a little better resolution and contrast. It looks like the seller has taken a Zeiss lens and tried to make a Zeiss-like OTA from it.

I think the price is way out of line with what I'd be willing to spend, though. Zeiss optics have a certain "collectible" value but I think the seller has overvalued collecting a Zeiss objective without it being a Zeiss complete OTA. Just my opinion though. I've seen a genuine Zeiss OTA for even more.

For comparison you could get a 100mm Takahashi Fluorite for around $2500.

At least it is an "A" objective...-----> an apochromatic doublet. But still not the best they had in those days.

See classic manuals, 1920 Carls Zeiss Jena catalog; inside the link: to catalog2, page 104-106

I’m with nFA on this. I would spend $2500 differently, were I so fortunate in these hard times to have money to spend on another telescope.

Who knows if the seller will get that price? Asking ain’t getting.
