Cheating with a Baader semi APO filter?

#1

Post by Glenbo58 »

Looking for a semi apo doublet refractor.Visual for now but will grow into A/P with it eventually. My budget has me looking at a Lunt 102 Ed. It has the equivalent of FPL51 glass.
An Explore Scientific AR127 is around the same price. More aperture but chromatic. If I added a Baader semi APO filter to the ES would the CA be close to the Lunt?

Viven SLV 5mm. GSO 2.5 3 element barlow

Where are you looking at the Lunt 102mm, it is not on their webpage so no idea on price of it.

If you are looking at a AR127mm I would suggest this as alternative: https://www.astronomics.com/astro-tech- ... r-ota.html
The semi apo filter is an aggressive filter but I am not sure how much it would help for astrophotography.

With the combined cost of the AR127mm and 2" Semi-Apo you are at around $850USD, if you save a bit more you could purchase:

Lunt Engineering 102ED is essentially the same scope as the Astrotech 102ED scope. It sells for around $700US or $950 CAN. Seems we have less access to many brands such as Astrotech or TS optics here in Canada without buying overseas or the US & paying enormous fees in exchange rates & shipping. A decent FPL53 f/7 lanthenum doublet starts at about $1400 CAN. here. I had heard of owners of decent quality Achromats such as Explore Scientific AR series with a Baader semi APO filter & being pleased. Athough I'm sure it is not near as pleasing as a nice APO scope. Whatever I decide on I was looking at a Explore Scientific EXOS2GT with PCM8 for a mount. I recently sold my Celestron Ultima 8 scope & kept the eyepieces. I wanted something lighter with a quicker setup. I also enjoy viewing star clusters galaxies & nebulas which the Ultima 8 was not great at. I also still like gazing at the planets & the moon. I would eventually like to add astrophotography equipment to the scope but just enjoy visual viewing for the time being. The used market has really dried up for these types of scopes around here with the Covid crisis going on. I may just wait until spring & keep saving.

 I just looked at a few Canadian websites
I did not realize how much the exchange had changed and I will not complain about pricing here anymore!

You may be able to get some decent images with the AR127mm, though I suspect you will become quite good at filtering out CA effects.

I do hope the combination works for you.

Well, I pulled it off. I got a good deal on a well maintained AVX mount with upgrades & bought the Lunt Engineering 102ED. Same scope as AT 102 ED, TS Optics 102 ED, Starwave Acsent 102ED. Good reviews, Not a 100% APO but pretty darn good for the price.

I own the Semi-APO filter from Baader. It is not all it’s cracked up to be. It’s knocks about 1/2 stop off of the brightness and doesn’t get rid of all of the CA. So the decrease in brightness and with the CA still mildly present, I stopped using it.

Cheers,
JT
