Refractor collimation

#1

Post by Michael131313 »

I have an ES AR102. I bought a refractor collimating eyepiece from Agena, took the cross hairs out, removed the diagonal, inserted and adjusted to get a spot on bulls eye. My question is: Can you have a spot on bulls eye with the focuser out of adjustment? I believe my focuser is fine, thanks to Gabby's help. Just wanted to know.

Thanks Michael
ES AR 102 102mm, f/6.5, ES 254mm f/5 DOB, Obie 10x50, GSO SV 30mm, ES 68° 20mm, ES 82° 14mm, 11mm, 8.8 mm, 6.8mm, 4.7mm. Twilight 1 mount.

If the focuser is only slightly out of alignment you could get it close enough that the lens will appear to be in collimation.
If the focuser was out of alignment enough you would be seeing aberrations in the view so if you are not I would say they are both aligned well enough.

Achromats can be a little bit more forgiving on the overall alignment than a apochromatic.

I'd be comfortable on DIY collimation with a doublet. I don't have the tools to handle a triplet.
