New scope a Skywatcher 10 inch Dobs

#1

Post by Richard »

A hotel near me was being refurbished by a friend of mine and they had a 10 inch Skywatcher telescope , I went to see it , I think it was never used the primary had so much crap on it was like some thought it was a garbage bin ! anyway I took a chance and got it , it all cleaned up 100% these mirrors are quite strong, after a good clean the telescope actually looks quite new, however as I am used to my GSO with bearing in both alt and AZ movement the Teflon pads and nylon bushes on the Skywacher are a dissapointment.
The View is a bit better but with my near impossible sky not much better than the 8 inch , so may take it to the farm or sell

Nice pick-up. I also recently cleaned my primary and secondary mirrors on my 10" Dob. It was amazingly dusty (and also pollen) but the result was 100% successful.

Yes I did read your post on the cleaning Michael thanks , I just put it in our dishwasher , as it was not just dust , this was another level , once out it was amazing I just placed in a bath of distilled water and dried with a industrial fan came out fantastic , but I think its quite a new scope so all the crap on it did not have time to do any damage (potato peels, carrots and lot of other crap from a kitchen)

From your pix, it looks like it cleaned up quite well.

That's crazy! Good that the mirror did not get damaged. Going from 8" to 10" gives you about 55% increase in light-gathering, not mind blowing but should be quite noticeable.

Amazing how poorly these get treated at times, glad you could get it operational at least.
Hopefully some clear skies come your way to enjoy it.

I always wanted to open a "rescue center for dogs" like facility for telescopes, but alas, there is not much demand for that kind of service.

Nice job on the refurbishment Richard!

Nice deal Richard, good for you! I hear you on the Teflon pads and nylon, not the best. I have one as well, I basically paid $300 for it with a trade, and I replaced the nylon with some 3mm plastic, much smoother. It also needed a cleaning, some rotted wood cut out from the bottom of the alt part, and a replacement of the top part of the az. Needed some work, but for a scope that sells new here for almost $1000 with tax, I'm as happy as you :D
009.jpg

Yeah, it's a rat-scope, but I am quite happy with the views. I hope your mirrors are as good as mine, and from you've said they probably are :D

Look forward to hearing about your viewing experiences!

My C8 was in it's storage trunk for years. Well since 1977. Had it out a few times. Finally was able to use it a few years back. It was bad. No dust but mirror and glass were coated. Took me several hours to clean it. Huge difference. I never would have chanced it in a dishwasher. Either way nice grab.

Yes I should have, the tube was almost full with waste from a kitchen quite disgusting so I thought not to torture people here , they must of thrown crap in and then close the lid.
I had to take it "as is" so could not empty it there , If I did I would of lost the finder and 2 reasonable Plossl eyepieces. Looking at the design it cant be more than 5 years old, so far have only looked at Orion nebula and I did notice a bit of colour , thats good , will give it another test today , if it stays clear.
Just for interest cleaning the mirror (primary) in a dishwasher was probably the best as it was really bad , like one could not see any reflection at all due to lard etc and I thought that the high heat and degrease should be better than any manual work which could scratch it

To give this new scope a chance I decided that the poor Alt AZ movements can be a bit better , I sanded the base with 100 sandpaper and then polished it same with the nylon bushes (done on a lathe) , someone must of used the scope a bit ,as there was wear on the bushes , not noticeable but on a lathe I could see it , then I put some rubber on the focus wheels for better traction and off we go tonight[ cant And Image

So after around 2 hours I must say the movements are a bit better but not good , will have to try something else but I suppose its like making a EQ 2 mount work as well as a EQ 5 virtually impossible , I fell for the chaps that have this set up on their dobs

Not being happy with the scopes movement I tried some reinforced teflon tape on those nylon bushes, well it worked fantastic its as good as my GSO , such a simple thing why those bushes are not made from teflon cant be a lot on money?
The Az movement is the same cant think of anything besides replacing the teflon pads with roller bearing , but them I thought of dry lubricant like a soft 3b pencil , so I "coloured" the correct spots and hey presto its fine now, not sure how long that will last but at least one can use the scope to star hop or track , without it jumping all over the place

Had a good 3 hours with it and yes it is better than a 8 inch but in my area not good , the scope is heavy for me so have to move base and OTA separately not ideal for me , for the extra effort a 8 inch is better for me, this scope would just sit so better to pass on

So I tried to sell this scope (before all the CV crap) for like 250us but no takers , so I have made a plan , I had some heavy duty wheels with lock function and some 32mm cheap worktop , so make a platform for it , I drilled holes in the worktop to accomodate the 3 legs so it does not slip ,attached a rope so I can drag it outside on my paving, It cant go on Grass but the view from the paved area is ok I only used 3 wheels so it may topple over if I am not careful as 4 did not work , but with 3 its stable once locked so I dont have to take it off

Hopefully you get some good use from it.
3 wheels are usually more stable than 4 as you cannot get a side to side tipping motion by balancing on 2 wheels.
