Re: Dobsonian mount play?
Thanks for the link man1!
What size did you get? I was looking at the 12 3/4" for $30.
I've decided to disassemble the mount. Clean everything up and try to eliminate the 3 degrees of lash first.
If I don't get decent results I may go ahead with the bearing modification.

Re: Dobsonian mount play?
Does anyone have thoughts on lubricating the existing Teflon "bearings"?
I was thinking while I have it all apart maybe some graphite might help before I jump into the bearing mod?
Thanks!
Larry

Re: Dobsonian mount play?
Hi Larry,
What size did you get? I was looking at the 12 3/4" for $30.
I've decided to disassemble the mount. Clean everything up and try to eliminate the 3 degrees of lash first.
If I don't get decent results I may go ahead with the bearing modification.
-------------------------
I got the 12 3/4" version, this is truly a great product. The height of this unit is 17.2mm. I am lucky we have a local Lee Valley store here in Ottawa Canada, and I checked for the play and the quality of the unit before I purchased it. No play at all, excellent bearing. I didn't receive my scope yet (next Friday... it left Orion's inCA and currently in San Pablo CA - also known as the UPS Bermuda triangle ), but I will measure the height and the clearance of the encoder and if needs be I will use a router to create a round channel that the Lazy Susan will fit in. The goal is to have enough space to clear the encoder and not scrape as it turns. Since I have the tools, I will measure the min...max distance between the magnet disc and the pickup.
I am doing this since many people complain about the stickiness of the teflon pads. To eliminate even further I will make my own motor drive. I am not doing any photography, but I want things to operate as smooth as possible. I will use a T7C camera looking through the focuser to my laptop.
Cheers, man1

Re: Dobsonian mount play?
Having read many post on that topic.... The best I heard was Teflon - the kind that you put on your bicycle chain. It wont attract dust and it seems to work for a while.
Hope that helps...

Re: Dobsonian mount play?
Update:
I disassembled my base this morning and found the broken bits of the RF suppressor inside. I don't think it was causing any problem but I removed them.
I then found my base is already equipped with a bearing. It looks as though a good cleaning and lubrication is in order and I will try to eliminate the lash.

Re: Dobsonian mount play?
This can't be good either....
My AZ bearing is a plastic disc with steel rollers evenly spaced. This disc is sandwiched between 2 metal discs.
It appears this scope was dropped or something because the metal discs have dents in them from the rollers!
This can be felt and the pictures don't really illustrate how severe it it...... The center image is of the bearing side.
The other two are the sides of the metal discs opposite the bearing!
