Guide Scope Bahtinov Mask

#1

Post by Graeme1858 »

Here's my new Guide scope Bahtinov mask! I used the 9.25 mask as a template and cut up a cornflake packet!

Image

Haven't used it yet. Do you think it will work?

The table isn't usually that dusty, it's pollen from a bunch of flowers I bought the missus!

Regards

Graeme

Sure it will work.

Might want to sand some of the rough 'fuzz' off and paint it black ;)

On a side note, some folks claim that they get a more consistent 'centroid' for the guiding software when the guide scope is slightly out of focus.

Nicely done; I agree with Tom on the edges/paint thing. I could use one of these for my DSLR, thanks for the inspiration, and hope the missus liked the flowers :D

All the best,
Mark

Nice project!

On my 50mm guide scope I just get 'close' as it seems to guide better just a touch out of focus. Give it a try and let us know how it works!

Cheers Tom

Finishing observations noted.

Interesting point on the focusing. I find that when I'm focused more stars are visible to guide on.

All the best,

Interesting. I'll clean it up and spray it then try it out. I can't just chuck it away, it cost a fortune!

It looks good to me, but I agree with the other posters, painting it black is probably a good idea.

I made a similar one for my 80mm guidescope. It was just supposed to be a temporary trial to see if it was worth having a small mask for the guider. Still using four years later.

That's encouraging. Perhaps I'll get some black spray paint and make a box to store the mask in!
