Meade ETX 125

#1

Post by Pitsmoor Col »

Hi. I bought a Meade ETX 125 from a Auction, It looked in fantastic condition so i put my bid in but kept getting outbid but kept on bidding I won in the end but maybe paid a bit to much but I wanted it and I thought the other bloke is not having it, I always get bloody minded at Auctions. Well any way I got it home tried it out and was disappointed to find the tube would not go up and down, I could hear the motor running so I knew that part was ok.Well I thought it's no good crying over it So I looked on youtube for a solution, and saw the same scope with the same problem, so following the video I took it apart and found exactly the same thing had happened to the other scope, it was the plastic pins that hold the screws, they had broken ( poor design I thought) I managed to repair it with epoxy resin and some through bolts, put it all back together and now it's just fine..

Nice that you could manage to fix it.

I have not had chance to use it yet, I believe I can get a power cable instead of using batteries, also a cable to link it to my lap top. I still have loads to learn..Colin..

Just make certain the plug tip is 5.5mm x 2.5mm center positive.

Well done, and enjoy! They generally have excellent optics, even if the mechanical bits are budget (I hate it when they use plastic like that!). I run mine with a 12V external sealed lead-acid battery and it works very well: internal batteries don't last very long at all.

I will always remember using one at Arkaroola in the northern Flinders Ranges of South Australia, and looking at Saturn at over 500x in sub-arc-second seeing with SQM readings hovering around 22: absolutely brilliant!

All the best,

Dean
Telescopes: 12" f5 dob, Celestron CPC800, 150mmf5 Celestron achro, Tak TSA102, TV76, ETX125...

Eyepieces: way too many (is that possible?), but I do like my TV 32mm plossl, 13mm Nagler T6, 27mm Panoptic and 3-6mm Nagler zoom, plus Fujiyama 18mm and 25mm orthos and Tak 7.5mm LE

I notice the lens cover is a bit heavy, and awkward to remove at times I find it hard to grip. I was wondering if there is a plastic push on cover on the market, I think it would be easier to remove and replace.

Elasticized shower cap perhaps? They are quite commonly used for keeping dust of lenses and mirrors.

I have two dust caps that are actually parts of food/take out containers I pulled out of recycling. We have so much plastic crap to choose from now days that I look at that first before I even look online.

(A little spray paint and no one will know your little secret. :D )

Good Idea mate, I usually am able to find old plastic caps that are a perfect fit for Eye Pieces. So will keep an eye out for a lens cover for the ETX 125.
