new lathe project

#1

Post by yobbo89 »

making a diy tilt adapter ,these cost a fortune and are by far the simplest adapters, a few pc thumb screws and some aluminum .

I did not want to modify my bought one , i will keep it for my sct setup , i currently need one that is 8mm thick to fit in the comma corrector in ,the bought one i have is 14mm thick including the male 2 male adapter. so a bit of an experiment, i might need to save space elsewhere, really gives me about 4 mm per each half of the adapter.

I just copied the other internal hole dimension for the threading, 41.40mm, i made mine 41.45 mm just to make sure it fits.

didn't have any round stock, had to use square plate,i should of cut the corners off, taking me too long

i just got to find a way to paint them without them flaking

Very nice. I am ignorant regarding this accessory. Where in the optical train would you place this device and why?

You would put it to the closest point to the camera, due to the nature of of multiple parts in a imaging setup and different machining tolerance and even the relative alignment in the cameras mounting point to its chip can be out, the tolerances add up, in effect when a scope is collimated with a tool it may be true and accurate with the collimation tool and eyepiece, but when the camera is added collimation will be out from misaligned machining, the effect is tilt error, in an image this effect may be enhanced from a coma corrector, showing corrected coma in one corner of the frame and on the other side is slightly defocused and Un corrected.

Minuscule correction is needed, 0-2mm

I have my setup on the back veranda,I probably would recommend a shed, moister is part of the problem from being out in the open,i'm usually oiling it every few days to prevent rust ,These chinese laths are so cheap now, cheaper then some 3d printers, I actually never consider buying one until i looked at the price, there's a learning curve to it, fortunately i work with machines as a part of my trade so i understand what safety precautions and correct procedure of use are.i probably recommend someone who is new to such tools to join a club especially with a lathe, or do a tafe course which aren't too expensive and you can add to your resume

Thank you for the information though as a paramedic I do not think it will help much on the resume
When I get my own property it may be something to consider purchasing so I quit having to bother the guys at the local shop.

Check your local hardware/paint store. There is a solution that etches aluminum to prep it for painting. You apply it, and then rinse the part. Then apply a primer and your final coat. Keeps the paint from flaking. I did this on an aluminum tube for a small reflector I made years ago. The paint stayed intact. Can't remember the name of it. Look in the section where they sell primers.

I was trying to find a safe method to machine the square to round, i ended up maching about 5 mm on one side of the face to my part od then flipping it and machining of another 3.5 mm on the face of the other side and then that left me with a 1.5 mm web and then i machine the web down from it's side in one pass using a wider edge on the lathe tool

Not laughing. Have been using lathes for 40 years since I built my first scope. I still grossly underestimate the machining time of even the simplest build.

Sometimes it's betteroff to buy the "overpriced" $60 adapter or what ever product you intend purchase, ahaha.

Every now and then I get a friend that ask me if I can make them something, and I usually tell them to save yourself money and buy it online.

Ps, still working on the other half of the adapter

I mostly do bespoke things that I can't buy or something simple that will save a lot over buying something. For example, earlier this year I made a sleeve to convert a 28mm ID iOptron counterweight to an 18mm ID Takahashi counterweight. The Tak counterweights cost a few hundred, I had the iOptron counterweights and never use both mounts at the same time. The sleeve took me about an hour to machine.

Nice job on the tilt adapter!

I have a small mill and often use it to make oddball things that are either not available, or are for sale but don't exactly work or fit the way I want. And it certainly is true that making stuff like this almost always takes way longer than anticipated.

It sure makes one appreciate fine machine work though. And it explains why the top end stuff is so expensive too.

I've had reasonably decent results painting aluminum if it's prepared carefully. Beadblast if you can and paint it with an aluminum primer right away as al. starts to oxidize immediately. If you can't blast, then sand it. Then overcoat with whatever you like. You might also find a shop in your area that does anodizing and could toss it in with a larger job in return for a six pack or so.

We use this at industrial scales on aluminum parts to simulate anodizing. Looks very similar.
