Need to Make a Dew Shield for my Telrad finder.

#1

Post by GCoyote »

The humidity has been so bad I'm prioritizing dew shields for gear that doesn't already have them.

Has anyone made a shield for a Telrad finder? How did you attach it?
I swap mine between different scopes and I'm not sure what will work best with repeated moves.

Any tips and suggestions welcome.
Any metaphor will tear if stretched over too much reality.

The link mentioned above is easy to make and it just attaches with velcro dots. You can also make a small dew heater for the telrad (eg - http://www.astromadness.co.uk/p/diy-tel ... eater.html) or maybe pick up one of these - https://www.dewcontrol.com/Dew_Heater_M ... 45473.aspx

No real dewshield, but just a plastic cover-up, when not in use. Roughly of the same shape as the backend of the Telrad. When I use the Telrad I remove the plastic cover. When the star is found I replace it, where it stays until I need the Telrad again.
Refractors in frequency of use : *SW Evostar 120ED F/7.5 (all round ), * Vixen 102ED F/9 (vintage), both on Vixen GPDX.
GrabnGo on Alt/AZ : *SW Startravel 102 F/5 refractor( widefield, Sun, push-to), *OMC140 Maksutov F/14.3 ( planets).
Most used Eyepieces: *Panoptic 24, *Morpheus 14, *Leica ASPH zoom, *Zeiss barlow, *Pentax XO5.
Commonly used bino's : *Jena 10X50 , * Canon 10X30 IS, *Swarovski Habicht 7X42, * Celestron 15X70, *Kasai 2.3X40
Rijswijk Public Observatory: * Astro-Physics Starfire 130 f/8, * 6 inch Newton, * C9.25, * Meade 14 inch LX600 ACF, *Lunt.

Looks like neoprene but I have similar material in stock. Not a bad idea, no drilling.

Finally came back to this and as is often the case around our house, it involved one of these.

I checked out that link. That gentleman has made a lot of interesting things to help him with his astronomy. Looking over his adjustable stool, I think I may try one of those, as soon as I get past a bunch of projects my wife wants. We are now both vaccinated and can start having kids and grandkids over, so things need to be changed from the way we have had them for the "siege." :occasion-balloons:

Bryan (bladekeeper) has made a dewshield like the one shown in the link and he has said it works well.
I use a dewshield+ with mine, it works well as it also allows you to use the Telrad like a 90° finder.
There are also dewheaters available for keeping Telrads clear.

A quick blow of a hair drier before use might be an alternative option?
