Caught a Few Doubles Tonight!

#1

Post by Juno16 »

Thrilled to get out after 25 days of poor skies. Forecast was clear skies with poor seeing until about 11 p.m.

I decided this afternoon to take the 5” newt (Nexstar SLT) out for a spin.

Ran a quick 3 star alignment with SkySafari (using the SkyPortal wifi module) at dusk and was off to the races!
Unfortunately, I had many issues with the SLT mount. Screen freezes with SkySafari and several dropped connections. The most concerning issue was the alt motor sounded like it was binding several times. Eventually, it would recover after a freeze, disconnect and re-connect. At about 9:15, lost the alignment and packed it in. Not without a few grabs though!

1 Camelopardalis
(Variable Double Star in Camelopardalis)
Observed: Mar 24, 2020 at 8:06:19 PM

Main yellow star has moderate brightness. Secondary pretty closely spaced possibly bluish in color.

11 Camelopardalis
(Variable Double Star in Camelopardalis)
Observed: Mar 24, 2020 at 8:10:18 PM

Very nice widely spaced pair ( 177.8”). Main star has very good brightness (mag 5.2) and white in color. Secondary is yellow also with good brightness (mag 6.2) .

Beta Monocerotis
(Variable Double Star in Monoceros)
Observed: Mar 24, 2020 at 8:33:08 PM

Beautiful triple star. All three members are crisp and bright at magnitudes 4.6, 5.4, and 5.6. Clear seperation between the b and c components at 2.8”.

Epsilon Monocerotis
(Double Star in Monoceros)
Observed: Mar 24, 2020 at 8:38:32 PM

Nice double with a bright mag 4 main star and a nicely spaced mag 6 secondary at 12”.

Messier 41
(Open Cluster in Canis Major)
Observed: Mar 24, 2020 at 8:41:35 PM

Beautiful open cluster of moderately bright stars that filled the fov with the 8mm agena.

HR 2764
(Variable Double Star in Canis Major)
Observed: Mar 24, 2020 at 8:44:39 PM

Striking mag 4.8 bright yellow primary star with msg 5.8 crisp blue-white secondary. Good seperation at 27”.
The view is so good in the 8mm it looks as nice as Albireo! Absolutely a fine double!

HR 2948
(Variable Double Star in Puppis)
Observed: Mar 24, 2020 at 8:48:29 PM

Superb optical double of almost equal brightness of 4.5 and 4.6 mag. Two bright headlights! Nice 10” seperation.

Algieba - Gamma1 Leo
(Variable Double Star in Leo)
Observed: Mar 24, 2020 at 8:52:15 PM

Very bright (mag 2 and 3) yellow stars with close (4.7”) separation.

All in all lots of fun. I guess I will have to open up the SLT mount one day to inspect and at the least lubricate.
This 130 mm newt gives nice bright views and I do enjoy using it with the SLT with wifi and SkySafari.

Seeing tonight was really poor and the sky was light gray. Hopefully tomorrow will be better and I can get the imaging rig out!

Thanks for reading!
Jim

Thanks nFA. I had fun. Just looked outside and it is about 75% clouded over. Got lucky I guess.

If the Beggin Strips worked once, pretty good chance they will work again. No guarantees!

Time to break “The Hound” in so that you won’t get “hounded” during your next session!

Nice going Jim! I really enjoyed reading your excellent report. I think it’s probably been close to a month since I had an opportunity to do some observing so I know how you feel. Raining right now as a matter of fact! Hang in there, lube that mount and thanks for sharing a nice session report.

Seems the weather gremlins are calming down, I have clear evening skies too!

You had a productive night, the colour differences of some double stars are always a pleasure to see.

Thanks Ed! It was fun to get out and check out some doubles. Even though I had some issues, the clouds would have shut me down anyway.
Need to pick up a used AVX to mount this newt on. Even with the small dovetail, it is pretty solid mounted. Does get into some weird viewing angles though!

It definitely is!

Thanks Ivan! AP isn’t always an option. To visually spot some beautiful targets is just as rewarding.

Thanks Graeme! Supposed to be nice here too (except for warm). I need to check though. I don’t think that the clouds all night and this morning were predicted in my sky forecast app. We will see!

Wonderful report Jim - good to see you get some viewing time in with the 5.1" Newt! Looking forward to getting out again for some more doubles. Algeiba is the one I usually use to test my optics.

Your report reminded me to recharge my power pack for my NexStar mount. Also need to get some viewing time in with my 5.1" Newt as well.
Scopes: Reflectors, refractors, and 1 catadioptric. Ranging in aperture from 50mm to 150mm.

I know that you are fond of smaller scopes. The 5.1 offers really nice views. Not quite as crisp as the frac, but but not too bad either. A tad brighter at f5.

All of the doubles were enjoyable views, but HR 2764 was quite stunning. Of course, Beta Mon was some treat too!

Thanks

Hi Jim. I'm glad that I like to look around the forum or I might have missed this excellent report. It looks like the skies opened up a bit for you this night. And, you caught a nice treasure trove of beautiful and colorful double star targets with the 5" Newt. Thanks for your very well written and fun read report Jim, and the best of wishes for more opportunities again soon.

Is HR 2764 the same as H3945, the Winter Albireo? Your description of it (magnitudes, separation, color) sounds like the latter.

If so, I saw it for the first time on March 17th (reported in my first double star report with the 50mm 'frac). I agree, its beautiful!
