I went out about 9:15 tonight as it was finally cooling off. In the west it was pretty clear and I could see the Moon setting. Ah, why not...
I went and got an 80mm and my Canon T3. Though it wasn't totally dark yet and the Moon was only 15* above the horizon, I took 36 shots at ISO 800 and 1/80 to 1/125 sec. exp. At the end of this, as I was putting on the dewshield cover, I thought "maybe I should take some darks, I wonder if they would make a difference, even just on the Moon?". I took six. Why six? I have no idea how many you're supposed to do, and it seemed an appropriate number...
My next thought was what exactly you were supposed to do with them in what program? I use PIPP to crop, AS2 for stacking, and either RegiStax for color output or ImPPG for monochrome output. This should be amusing...Downstairs I go, unload the files from the camera, and open them in PIPP. Well, that was easy! Right next to the image files tab is a dark files tab. So I add my dark files. Of course, now I'm looking at the flat files tab. I forget what those are, I'll have to look it up. The flat dark files tab sounds like a difficult combination of the previous two...
Well, I'll just pretend I didn't notice them and click the Do Processing tab Process it does. I usually set the output files to have the image quality percentage displayed, based on image brightness. Just for fun, I do the exact same processing in PIPP, but this time without the darks. I then compare the two output directories. The quality of the files with the darks was consistently higher. Not by a lot; between .08% to .36% at most, but I figure every little bit helps. Neat trick, that, I never knew or even thought of it before.
I process both directories, and immediately notice the final output of the two in AS2 is significantly different. The one with the darks has a blacker background, not as much "glow" on the lit side of the Moon; as in it's blacker closer to the edge of the disc, and no trailing artifacts or such on the unlit side. Even the terminator line was a touch more detailed.
Now I have to look into all this stuff with darks and flats and what have you
This also might not end well. Dark files will take me to the dark side, I fear. I must resist..... :Stop:

After that bit of revalation, I went back outside to see if it was clear. In my hour inside, it had yucked up considerably. So much for that. As I was feeling sorry for myself, I heard a scraping coming from up the neighbours tree. The local raccoons were awake it would seem. This may provide some amusement
Went back in, got the camera, put the lens back on, and back out I went. By this time, the two furballs were sitting on my fence. I went out the door a few feet and they didn't seem to notice or care.
For the remainder of this, these two foragers of the urban garbage can will be known as Lefty and Righty
Lefty seems to be waiting for Righty, who has a very brown tail, to finish the cleaning process.
I took a few steps closer, Righty got up to leave, probably thanks to me.
I think Lefty had just bumped into a part of Righty, as Lefty almost looks sheepish and Righty has a look of What just happened?
Whatever happened, it wasn't good, and Lefty got to hear about it.
Then, forgetting I was there, Righty sat down to clean again. I stepped closer, but I also stepped onto a branch which snapped.
After that they hustled off pretty quick. I'm sure the flash didn't help either!
I actually told my daughter the other day that teenagers (as in you, kiddo) are somewhat like raccoons. Yup, they sleep all day, are up all night, and eat anything and everything. I love the looks she gives me...
And that's my night. It's 1:15AM here, perhaps I should think about sleep. I am neither a teenager nor a raccoon
