Winter Octagon and Leonid(s)

#1

Post by Unitron48 »

In spite of the almost Full Moon and scattered cloud cover, I ventured out at 3 am this morning to check out the Leonid Meteor shower. You know I can't pass up a meteor shower :) !

With the Moon at my back, Orion and the rest of the Winter Octagon was to my right. Leo was low on the horizon, but fully exposed to the East. At about 3:20 am I caught my first Leonid...a dim and fast meteor heading right from the radiant. Then at about 3:30 am I caught a very bright (Procyon bright) meteor with an orangish trail heading out of Canis Minor. I kept watch until at 4 am, but cloud cover became progressively worse, so I called it a night.

Anyone else have any success?

Nice and tidy little outing Dave, well done. I haven't been out at home, but am considering it. However, I am not an 0300 person!

But my first evening out at the dark site recently (07 Nov) I did pick up a very meteor in the view while observing galaxies in Sculptor. Then later I saw a fairly bright one zip from Cetus down into Sculptor as I stood looking south. I didn't find any meteor showers active in that particular area, so they may have simply been random. Nonetheless, always a thrill to see some.

Considering conditions I would call it a success Dave. I saw a few meteors last Saturday morning while observing at the desert. One was bright with smoke trail. All in the same area as yours (Leo to Orion).
