Short and sweet!

We had our 9 year old grandson over tonight for a sleepover with Papa and Mimi. He has always been interested...at least mildly...in my telescopes and my hobby. The Moon was visible and he asked to take a look. I suggested we check out not only the Moon, but several planets that were visible in the evening sky. Before we set up the scope I pointed out Venus, Jupiter and Saturn...and talked to him about what we might see of each through the scope.

Seeing was below average, but sky conditions were good enough to catch the more significant features of each object. We first checked out the Moon at 38x, then 128x. He loved the shift from low to high magnification. I kept the TV 6mm Ethos in as we transitioned to the planets. He was able to describe the "half moon" shape of Venus, the four moons and several bands of Jupiter, and the rings of Saturn.

We concluded with a quick look at Albireo...before a football game called him in!

So far, I’ve only pointed out Jupiter (Saturn was behind clouds), but I’m working on bringing their little minds over to the Dark (Sky) side.

Thanks! He was able to refocus to his eyesight, and described lots of band structure on Jupiter! Would be great to have those youthful eyes again!!
