Reminder for upcoming Asteroid (4) Vesta- Leo Triplet Conjunction

#1

Post by AstroBee »

Hey guys/gals,

This is just a reminder post for the upcoming conjunction of Asteroid (4) Vesta and the Leo Triplet on June 10th, 2021
In my wide-field imaging rig, it will enter the Leo Triplet frame on June 5th and exit on June 13th but the 10th is the evening it passes closest to M65. as you can see in this screengrab.
Image

For anyone interested in grabbing a shot of the Leo Triplet, this dark moon cycle will just about be the last as Leo is nearing the Sun so it's a good opportunity to get out and view or image it.

I notice in Stellarium on the evening of the 11th, Vesta forms a diamond pattern with the Triplet, as it is opposite of NGC 3638, south of the trio. That should make in interesting image and visual.

Well, on Friday evening June 11, when I set up to start my capture of IC1396, I forget about Asteroid (4) Vesta until after dark. My scope was set up in a position that Leo was blocked by a tree.
Last night I moved my setup location by about 20' which cleared the tree for Leo and I managed to catch this animation of (4) Vesta's movement over a 2.5 hour period.
This is just two individual 30 second Lum exposures blinked to show the position and movement of the asteroid.

Hi Greg

Great shot.

I remembered but we've had a big winter storm hit SE Australia the past 8 days. Solid cloud, snow in many places not here, temps well below normal, flooding. Tens of thousands of people are without power. In some areas, TV and radio dishes filled with snow and stopped working. Not too bad here but solid cloud, no observing. Had to postpone my astrophotography workshop supposed to run last weekend until next new moon.

Thanks for the heads up anyway.

Joe
