More Smoke

Post by helicon »

Last night was clear (sort of) but guess what? There was so much smoke in the atmosphere that NELM was 1. I could make out the Summer Triangle (sort of). It's too bad because I hauled out both of my main scopes at sunset. No Dice again. Can't remember my last night out (July, I think)

Yucky.

Astrospheric's Smoke prediction looks like it MAY clear up here Thursday/Friday - I am hopeful as it is supposed to be clear Friday night.

Guess we will see.

Came out very well because the storm kept moving East of the projection. We really didn’t get much at all.

My son lives in Pensacola Florida. They got hit pretty hard. Lots of damage and a really big amount of flooding. Some locations got over 20” of rain.

I’m getting too old for this! Lots of stress. We were super fortunate.

I guess everywhere has some sort of weather/ fire issues. Good luck to you sir.

Thanks for asking!

We have a nearly crystal clear sky down here, for a change. I hope it stays away, well maybe it circles around the globe and comes back from the other side, there is enough in the air. Last night and the night before I was just able to see the 3 bright stars, not sure if the rest was fog or smoke.

Today my Optolong L-Enhance filter just got here and I need to try my OnStep controller for real, too. OnStep comes first let's see how the fog plays out tonight.

I have to say that the skies are almost normal here - and it is not cloudy - may have a chance at legitimate observing tonight. Good to hear Henk.

Great news Jim! I was quite worried. Now lots of folks are talking about leaving California and moving to Washington. But they are awash in smoke as well. Maybe the best thing is to relocate to rural Nevada, not very much fuel for the fires. Because of Covid rental rates are dropping in the Bay Area for the first time in 30 years, which is making my 25 year old nephew very happy. Lots of change in the future is the only certainty!

Haven't been out observing for a month now (since August 15th) Michael, but it looks like the skies are starting to clear up here in So Cal.

Hope to be observing again starting this weekend...

Kansas City area has been gray skies for the past 2-3 days. Planets are visible. 1st and maybe 2nd magnitude stars are visible depending on the direction you are looking. Took the binoculars out last night to see if it was worth setting up to do some visual observing...NOT. The binocs showed nothing but gray sky. Couldn't even see Polaris. Conditions are suppose to be better today, but not. Sky looks the same. Even so, if you have any light pollution, forget it. Forecast said skies will degrade again throughout the weekend. I take it these particulates are in the upper atmosphere and not anywhere near close enough to the ground to effect optics getting dirty. But then again, if you can't see anything, not worth setting up.
