Takahashi Mewlon & Friends.....

#1

Post by Rainmaker »

It is really great to see this forum up and running so I thought I would share my latest Outreach Setup:

The Public Viewing nights we hold at Mount Stromlo Observatory draw crowds of up to 1500 visitors per night so I am trialling a dual system to keep the people entertained

Mewlon 210 and TSA102S binoculars fitted with various eyepieces, the binoculars set for wide field and the M210 for closeup views of targets.....

Thanks, my bino-pairs are Tak LE 5, 7.5, 12.5, 18 & 30 as well as Pentax XF 8.5 & 12.
I also recently bought a pair of the LOA21 3D eyepieces which, though a bit of a gimmick, are superb and the 3D effect is fantastic on bright nebulae like Eta Carina and M42.
They are also really good for globular clusters, giving them a real globular 3D look.

We usually have around 12-15 scopes so the queues can get a bit long, especially for the larger scopes.
We run them at times when the moon is at least a good crescent as this is the most popular target with the exception of Saturn and Jupiter....
The sessions start at 7pm, I usually set up before 6pm, get an alignment asap and then get ready for the hoards...
I only wish people would not expect their 1, 2 and 3 year olds to be able to find the exit pupil....

I also have a high power laser that is used to point out objects (please note the use of this laser at MSO is quite legal,
in fact nearby is the Satellite Ranging Laser which is 40 Watt, its beam is like a highway to the stars..)

Now you have me curious, Rainmaker, what percentage of visitors come from outside of the ACT?

My guess is that they are all from Canberra, Queanbeyan or Yass... I think one Friday last year we had nearly 2000 during the one evening.... This year all tickets for the monthly public nights have been booked up to October... the tickets are free and booked through Eventbrite though I think many just turn up.... entry is a gold coin donation....

The older I get, the better I was.

Celestron Nexstar+ 127 SLT, several budget plossl eyepieces, Celestron 8-24mm zoom EP and a 12.5mm illuminated double reticle EP, Svbony SV205 camera w/.5 focal reducer, Celestron SkyMaster 20x80 binos on a 40 yr old QuickSet PanHead tripod, Stellarium, Sharpcap and ManyCam on my laptop, SkyView and Nightshift on my phone and a dandy little $9 red-light flashlight.

Rainmaker, thanks for that, I expected Canberra, and Queanbeyan to some extent makes sense, but didn't consider Yass.
