I don't think my insurance covers Takahashi disease LOL 😂

A few years ago a guy in my club pulls up to a starparty in an ancient Chrysler.
He then proceeded to unpack his gear, OMG😳 a bunch of high end gear including a large Tak.

He told his wife that he would rather have high end Astro gear than a nice car :)

I am in love with Takahashi TOE eyepieces as they are as good as any eyepieces ever made, take that Zeiss.
I'm fine with China made dash 53 triples, got 3 of em.
Arizona- where the sky's are not cloudy all night.

Triple lensed fracs are so yummy when looking at planets.

OK, I'll bite. :)

Story time: having always wanted a nice refractor I wangled a Vixen 114EDSS for one of those big birthdays (it was on a special at the time, and way cheaper than a Takahashi...). Quite a nice scope, but it had a single corrector element just in front of the focuser which really mucked up the view (!), so I removed that and it became an even nicer scope, although it still didn't like any power much over around 150x. However, it and most of my equipment was stolen one night (long story)...

The Insurance company came to the party (unbelievable!), and a Williams Megrez 110 came into my possession. I had played with several Megrez scopes before this, so I had high hopes, but sadly it was out of collimation and had two return trips to Taiwan from Oz, but even when in collimation it simply couldn't cope with any powers above 100x. Lovely low-power views, but...

The Oz dealer had been great, but couldn't help any more, so I had direct discussions with Williams (the scope was out of warranty by this time), and they offered me a FLT110, which was just coming out, at cost. This was a potentially great deal, and was typical of them: great service and support, no complaints! However, when I asked if they could guarantee it could cope with 50x per inch of aperture, all they would say was that it would give "sharp views". I asked how it would compare with a Takahashi, and they said "We can't match them." (Footnote: they do come a lot closer now than they did then.)
So I sadly said thanks, but no thanks...

However, every time I took the Megrez out for a play I would come back in complaining about the view, and finally my wife (a Queen amongst wives!) said "For heavens sake get a telescope you are happy with!".
The Megrez was sold (for a bargain price), a TSA102 was winging its way to my door within a week, and it has never disappointed me. A definite keeper!

I am not sure about the "pretentious" comment (see my current telescopes below: not to mention my avatar photo!). After all, Taks are cheaper here in Oz than high end SV, AP, TEC and TV to name a few, and there is a thread called "Takitis" on that other site that has nearly 5000 responses...

For me it is about satisfaction with a quality product that will probably get handed down to my Grandkids, and in terms of $ per view or per year even it really is very cheap.
BTW, later on I scored some Tak 22x60 binos for an excellent price: and they aren't going anywhere either!

Enough waffle. Happy viewing all,

Dean

(PS: I once powered up the Tak to 810x on Jupiter just for fun. This of course is ridiculously high for a 4" scope, and the contrast at that power is hopeless because you are dealing with a 0.25mm exit pupil: but the edge of the planet was sharp. No problems with the quality of Tak (i.e. Canon) lenses!)
Telescopes: 12" f5 dob, Celestron CPC800, 150mmf5 Celestron achro, Tak TSA102, TV76, ETX125...
Binos: Steiner Wildlife XP 10x26, Swarovski 8x30 Habicht, Zeiss SFL 8x40, Vanguard Endeavour 10.5x45, Fuji FMTR-SX 10x50, Tak 22x60, Orion Resolux 15x70
Eyepieces: way too many (is that possible?), but I do like my TV 32mm plossl, 13mm Nagler T6, 27mm Panoptic and 3-6mm Nagler zoom, plus Fujiyama 18mm and 25mm orthos and Tak 7.5mm LE

I have changed many out over the years.
Moonlite is a good solid choice and Ron is a pleasure to deal with.

Bought a little while back, wanted to see what all the fuss was about and to compare to my Orion ED80. Top notch optics and a delight to use, but no mystical optical quality. Comparing to the Orion, slightly better colour correction, but the Orion is no slouch. I'm not much of a refractor aficionado, but could easily keep one or the other.
