Celestron SkyMaster 20x80 Binos

#1

Post by AbbN »

I've decided to go with the 20x80's. I've got a pair of 10x50's and 8x50's which I can easily hand hold. I've used my former 15x70's on a tripod I have strictly for it was well as a good Bogen monopod quite frequently with them. So perhaps I won't miss the handheld capability of the 15x70's.

Amazingly this site gives them their "Editor's Choice" award

BTW, I WILL NEVER LEAVE MY BINOS UNATTENDED ON MY FRONT PORCH AGAIN!!!!!

Many thanks everyone :)

It's the direction I would have gone as well. The other two pair would cover my needs for hand holding. However I will say that I absolutely LOVE my little 2.3x40 constellation binoculars if you ever care to go the other way with it. The summer Milky Way is a real treat with them.

Thanks for the discussions/advice - I now have the same item headed my way by Wednesday. I have owned for many decades a very sturdy video camera tripod - the old Quickset Pan Head Model 5-955343-9 sporting a 20# load capacity - that should be a perfect match to these 20x80's. The tripod was purchased originally to mate with one of the first ever home color video camera's that was a beast roughly the size of a desktop PC weighing in similar to a bowling ball - lol

I've been relatively lucky with all my Amazon Prime shipments. Sometimes they don't make the promised 'next day' or 'two day' delivery windows, but for all the items I buy I think only one has ever been lost and I received a prompt refund for it.

Actually I've relatively good luck with Amazon Canada as well. Whatever I've ordered so far usually got delivered got shipped out the next day and I always go for the "free shipping"

Ohhhhhhhhhhh well, they get here when they get here :D

Amazon delivered them this evening. I also picked up a $10 all metal quick release assembly for the tripod/binos - works like a charm.

A few pics, cuz otherwise it didn't happen - lol

One rather amusing (to ME anyway) tidbit. The 8-1/2x11 black on white owner's "manual", printed in no less than 5 languages, one page per language, uses a font so flippin' tiny you need to use those very binoculars to read it. Holy Optometric test Batman! - lol

Just got an email saying they supposedly just got shipped :)

The manual is available on Celestron's site and the font is tiny even on my 27" monitor on my desktop computer !!!!!! At any rate, I just cleaned my magnifying glass

Hope they arrive quickly - they ARE nicely packaged within their color-picture cardboard sleeve encased in a poly-foam "box". Celestron includes a 'carry bag' with straps, but it is rather flimsy. I'm looking around for something a bit more robust with real padding to protect the investment but not break the bank.

Filed under I'm a pack-rat - lol - I found a plastic large pistol case in the attic that I bought over 25 years ago that fits the new binos perfectly, once one layer of the egg-crate foam was removed.

This is exactly what I am now using to carry and protect my 20x80's - and is available for under $20 - the seller wants an unreasonable $26 just for shipping, but a case this same size or larger found elsewhere would fit.

Good news. I definitely see why a tripod is mighty handy - these are pretty big rascals - lol

All weekend evening rains forecast. I can only blame myself for buying that 127SLT Mak all those weeks ago. It sure feels like the skies haven't been clear since.
