Focus order, does it matter?

#1

Post by The Happy Parrot »

For years, when using my old 8x22 binoculars, I have focused the central knob before the right eyepiece diopter correction. Reading the instructions on my new 10x50's, I see they call for right diopter correction first and then central knob focus. Does the order matter?

Most of what I have read suggests the central knob first then the right diopter, while closing your left eye. This allows the binos to really snap to focus. It's suggested for both birding and astronomy.

Went back and read the instructions once more and you are 100% right:

1.Adjust eye interval
2. Use left eye to focus object
3. Adjust diopter control while using right eye
4. Bring subject into focus

It was the fourth step the threw me off. Thanks, Michael!

Всем привет! Буквально вчера написал статью, о том, как настраивать диоптрию в бинокле (алгоритм действий).

You can't focus the diopter adjustment until after the centre focus adjustment has been made. The purpose of the diopter adjustment is to adjust the relationship between the focus of the left eye and the right eye. In other words to set the correct focus for the right eye when the left eye is correctly focused. If the left eye is not correectly focused, there is no relationship: the adjustment of the right eye will be arbitrary and not related to anything.

Always focus the left eye first with the common focuser, and then adjust the right eye until it is clear.

That's right Kathy, thanks. it's just the way the instructions are laid out with a final focus after left/right adjustments that confused me.

Всем привет Kos/Hello Kos. Thanks for the link to the article about diopter adjustment you recently wrote. I am curious to see what kind of telescopes and binoculars are available in Russia. I imagine there are high quality instruments available.

I concur with the general procedure as mentioned by several folk here. I'll just add one thing. . .

Place the right eye adjustment between the extremes before focusing with the central wheel. That will give the most latitude for perfect adjustment of the right eye.
Binoculars are such a versatile instrument!
