A Mirror For Your Binoculars
I wont be making one. Just thought forum members would be interested, and your thoughts. Has anyone tried using a mirror with binoculars?

A few years ago a binocular-mirror product was offered by a mfr, but failed in the marketplace.

I have tried this for my 20x80s. It was a first surface mirror that was much smaller (attached right in front of the objectives). It wasn't cheap, about $40, but the quality was not good enough and the views were blurry so it was a waste of money. I heard from someone else who experienced the same. It may work with smaller magnification.

If it is optically satisfactory it certainly won't be cheap.

Somebody made a DIY version with a pair of oval front-surface mirrors. Much cheaper supposedly than a large-ish 1/4-wave (?) flat.
I do like the idea and spent some time researching it. Looking down is much easier for me than leaning back if I don't have a recliner.
Addendum: 1/4-wave 12-in square is $1,800.

I remember a similar experiment years ago. It turned out that the highest technical requirements were necessary for the optical flat mirror. Some pinching or deformation of the mirror was inevitable and the surface flatness had to be of high optical standards. In other words, only at lowest magnifications it worked. And the costs were high. More or less according to the findings of Skyhiker .
A thin mirror that size flexes much more than wanted.
Holding a finger against the side of a 1,5 inch thick mirror for 15 seconds or so is already visible as a "mountain" in an optical test. A 1/5 mm grain of sand between cell and mirror or lens can be responsible for visible pinching. Glass is deformed so easily, although not visible to the naked eye.

Here is my contraption, actually not a bad one, nice and compact. As you can see the mirror is not even large. It is not really squeezed tight between the screws. I will take another look and see if it can be made to work but I tried hard enough back then IIRC.
Now that I think of it, the rubber band does push the mirror into the binocular rims with a decent amount of force so it does not drop to the ground. What I can do is put some screws in front of the mirror so the binos push against the screws, not the mirror. I sense a glimmer of hope.

I started looking for it to try again but I believe I may have thrown it in the trash.
