Need Help Finding Very Wide Angle Binoculars

#1

Post by Refractordude »

I have a pair of 7x50, but they only have a 5.7 degrees field of view. Think I will drop them in the bug out bag since they are well made. I was looking at Orion from the bathroom window with my 8x40 binoculars. Gave a great wide 8.2 degrees view of Orion. They have very good glass, but the housing is very weak. They are now broken. I want a minimum of 7.0 degrees field of view, and 18mm eye relief. May get two pair. Wide exit pupil for my dark site, another of the cheapo MaxUsee 8x40 for home use. I really like the 8.2 degree field of view. My budget is no more then $150. Since the MaxUsee 8x40 binoculars have such good optics, I my just get 5 pairs. I have a few in mind listed below with the MaxUsee binoculars.

May get a pair of 20 or 25x100 very soon. Just not certain if I want a pair of 90 degree 100mm binoculars instead, which means I will have to wait a little longer. If I can get a pair of 20 or 25x100 used, I will snatch them. I could sell the used pair for the same price I got them for, and get the 90 degrees later. I do know I need some 40mm or 50mm aperture wide views now. Thanks to you all

pakarinen:

I compared edge sharpness from the center between the Orion UltraView 8x42, and my Oberwerk LW 11x70. Stars were just as sharp in both, but the Orions begin to lose sharpness about 75 percent towards the edge. The Oberwerks are sharp a little more than 90 percent towards the edge. It seems that the Orions show a little less bright image than my Levenhuk 7x50 binoculars. The Orions are just as well built as the Levenhuks, but with smoother baby oil like focus adjustments. The Orion retracting eye cups are good for people who wear eyeglasses. However, with the eye cups retracted down creates a little blackout problem. You will have to remain very steady to avoid this problem. With the eye cups retracted all the way out, I was able to observe the entire 8.2 degrees field of view with out any black outs.

The Orion UltraView 8x42 are not bad binoculars. However, I think I will send these Orions back. I have the Levenkuk 7x50 that only provide a 5.7 degree field of view, but they are close to the edge in sharpness. To me a fun part of this hobby is trying out different eyepieces, binoculars etc.

I had Orion UltraView 8x42 briefly, but sent them back. The view quality was step down compared to my other two Orion's binoculars.

I got Nikon Action EX 8x40, 8.2 deg instead and very happy with them. Good build quality, waterproof and good views.
