20 x 80 binoculars

#1

Post by Buckethead 2.0 »

Would I see a significant difference upgrading to 20 x 80 from my current 10 x 50? What kinds of differences might I expect? (Yes, I know I will need a solid mount).

Smaller FOV, so you might find it more difficult to find specific objects.

My 20x80 Zhumell binoculars have an internal aperture of 72mm. I can see way more stars than my 7x50 binoculars, which have a true 50mm aperture.

Yes you will see a significant difference! I have a 20x80, 10x50 and an 8x50 (got as a gift).

I can hold my 20x80 binos steady only for just a few seconds so it does require either a tripod or monopod but it is a joy to use. I use my 10x50's to check out the sky before taking out a scope and at times us it to help me find my intended scope target.

More objects will be visible. Andromeda will be stunningly large and bright, fainter clusters can be swept up, easier to view the moons of Jupiter, and so forth. Definitely worth the upgrade in my opinion. You also will still be able to use your 10x50's. I use 10x50, 15x70, and 25x100 pairs.

Excellent, Abb and Michael. Thank you. Now I know I will need the upgrade, but I think I should get my mount first. That way, until I can afford the 20x80, I can mount the 10x50 for steady views with the current binos.

I know that some members here avoid the (I think) Celestron Skymaster because of frequent problems with collimation being out upon arrival, so what pair would be good and affordable - in the say, $150 max range? Give or take, I could budget more, but I would like to set that as a max for now.

Oberwerk Lightweight (LW) 15x70s look to me to be the same as the C-trons, but ppl swear the Obies are better. Don't know if that's QC by Obie or different internal specs or what. The Obie 20x80s are a bit over your budget.

https://oberwerk.com/product-category/b ... ht-series/

If you get a good pair of Skymasters, I really think they're a good value. Problem is it might take you a few orders and returns until you get a good pair. Or you might luck out and get a pair that's perfect out of the box. Time and effort (maybe) versus cost.

I would suggest 15x70 instead of 20x80. 15x70 will provide substantial increase (~2x) in light gathering over 10x50, and yet 15x70 is still lightweight to be used handheld or with monopod (my favorite setup). 20x80 gather only about ~30% more light compared to 15x70, noticeable with trained eye but not drastic. However, as you indicated you will need a solid mount for those.
Scopes: Stellarvue: SV102ED; Celestron: 9.25" EdgeHD, 8" SCT, 150ST, Onyx 80ED; iOptron: Hankmeister 6" Mak; SW: 7" Mak; Meade: 80ST.
Mounts: SW: SkyTee2, AzGTi; iOptron: AZMP; ES: Twilight I; Bresser: EXOS2; UA: MicroStar.
Binos: APM: 100-90 APO; Canon: IS 15x50; Orion: Binoviewer, LG II 15x70, WV 10x50, Nikon: AE 16x50, 10x50, 8x40.
EPs: Pentax: XWs & XFs; TeleVue: Delites, Panoptic & Plossls; ES: 68, 62; Vixen: SLVs; Baader: BCOs, Aspherics, Mark IV.
Diagonals: Baader: BBHS mirror, Zeiss Spec T2 prism, Clicklock dielectric; TeleVue: Evebrite dielectric; AltairAstro: 2" prism.
Filters: Lumicon: DeepSky, UHC, OIII, H-beta; Baader: Moon & SkyGlow, Contrast Booster, UHC-S, 6-color set; Astronomik: UHC.

Observing: DSOs: 3106 (Completed: Messier, Herschel 1, 2, 3. In progress: H2,500: 2180, S110: 77). Doubles: 2382, Comets: 34, Asteroids: 255

Get the Skymaster 15x70 from Amazon. Keep returning them until you get a good pair. Most likely the first pair will be good. Amazon will pay for return shipping. You can simply print a UPS label out from your Amazon acct. Just make sure they are shipped from Amazon. When/if they go out of collimation, check out this YouTube video. I would recommend a mount for the 15x70 binoculars. They can be hand held, but not for long. I use the Orion Tritech II. You will have to get the tripod from Orion, but they have a good return policy. I had a problem with the first one they sent me. Orion emailed me a UPS label. Once they got the returned tripod, a second one was shipped out to me the same day. Very important (the true aperture of both the 15x70 Skymasters and Oberwerk LW 15x70 is 62mm or 63mm). I would get the 20x80 binoculars, but then more cash for a stronger mount.

Just remember AMZ has a limited return / exchange window. I sent back the first, broken pair of Skynasters right away, but waited too long to return the second, badly out of collimation pair.

So for example, M31 would look brighter and bigger with an upgrade? Or dimmer and bigger? I know with raising magnification with telescopes, you lose brightness. Is it the same with binos?

Hmmm, I found Oberwerk 15x70 for $129.95, and I bookmarked it. Even the 20x80 isn't bad at $199.95. But considering I need a mount, I will likely opt for the smaller pair.

....or I could go the Refractordude route and try my luck with Celestrons, and the cheaper price would hasten my ability to get a mount. Choices, choices...

If you have Amazon prime, you can give it a shot. Amazon shipping is slower nowdays but you could still try a few pairs in 30 days period. With some luck you could get a collimated pair.

I do in fact have Prime. I order from them several times a month, so it is economical for my needs. I might just do that, and try my luck. And like previously noted, I will pay attention to the returns window in case they are not collimated. And I do not dare try collimating them myself.
