Oberwerk 25x100's Center or independant Focus?

#1

Post by Gulf Coast Guy »

I'm moving ever closer to my purchase of an Oberwerk 25x100 binocular. I'm planning this binocular to be for exclusive astronomy use and more than likely I will be the only user. The binocular is offered either as an individual focus instrument or as the more conventional center focus. My plan isto purchase the Individual focus option because once focused on any star It could be stored with that focus point intact and ready for the next session.

Thoughts?

At the recent (and last) Pixieland Star Party in Goldendale, Washington, I had the pleasure of looking through these exact binoculars that were mounted on an Orion parallelogram mount. The Obi's were independent focus and they were a big delight viewing in daylight and at night. Too bad that they are way out of my budget limitations.

I have the Oberwerk 25 X 100s with the independent focusers. I really like them. I rarely have to refocus between sessions.
I think that you are going to be quite please with them.

Another VERY GOOD thing about the IF model is that the EPs are threaded for filters, the CF model is not. The filters work very well when observing most nebulae. Most often I use a Celestron UHC on one side and a DGM NPB on the other. M42 is glorious!!

Well, the UBM is delayed but the Swing hinge has been shipped and due Wednesday.

One more sale - a woodshop wood cart/rack and I'll put the order in for the Binos. I've promised my wife I'll wait for my birthday in Sept to open it. She really enjoys birthdays, and with what she's been through with my stroke, I'm glad to go along.

My 1944 US Navy binos have individual focus adjustments. Quite nice compared to center focus IMO. They're only 7x50s though.

If you are going to be the only user, the independent focus is very good. One you take the step up to 100mm, you will rethink your telescope needs! Honestly, I can say that I am fortunate to have the Oberwerk 100mm ED binocular telescope and eyepieces. The views are so good, I am ditching all of my scopes 6" or less. Two eyes and 4" has to bee seen to be really appreciated. It is like looking through 2 WO 100mm refractors. You will spend so much more time comfortably observing with big binos!

After a lot of internal debate, I decided to get the Oberwerk 20x65 ED over the 25x100's. I love the 20x65 but I wouldn't be surprised if I get a pair of 25x100's in the future.

The reason I went for the 20x65 over the 25x100's was the size. After talking with Kevin at Oberwerk a few times the smaller size fits my needs better since I want them to be carry on luggage size. I just got back from a trip and they were perfect to meet my travel needs.

What tripod are you going to get? The Oberwerk Series 5000 sounds like a good match.

BTW, my 20x65's are independent focus. That works fine for astronomical observing and most terrestrial viewing. In my opinion the center focus is better when you need to focus on something is moving fast, like planes at an air show. However you won't be doing that with the 25x100's anyway because of the size and weight.

For traveling, I think you made a good decision. Anything over 70mm starts to get bulky, not to mention weighty. If you are flying, weight is an issue.
