Recommendations on binocular hinge grease

#1

Post by DozerBolt »

Greetings!
I just worked up the courage to completely disassemble my Celestron Nature 8x30 small Porro prism binoculars - they are quality optics, and are a sister of the Leupold Yosemite, Kowa Y, Orion and others of this design; but clearly, Celestron saved some bucks on assembly and Q&A (so their specs and views are solid, but the build quality left something to be desired). The eyepieces were misaligned, so I have gained substantial skill in this rebuild!

Problem: both the hinge joints, and the ocular travel guides have always been very sticky, with perhaps a bit too difficult friction (I'm sure which contributed to the stresses resulting in misalignment.)

Question: all bits are strongly in need of additional/replacement lubrication, but what kind should I use?
I'm guessing WD-40 is not the answer, but I know zero about grease - lithium lube? I read about "sticky lube" from the factory?
Help! Any/all recommendations readily accepted...

I would try Silicon grease.

Here's a link to a variety of brands for sale...

Thanks! I never would have thought of the term 'damping grease' - it opens up a new world of solutions.
