Rowan Belt Modification to NEQ6 Pro Results

#1

Post by howardschneck »

For those interested, I did just complete a Rowan Belt Mod on my NEQ6 Pro mount. I was able to get out the past 2 evenings and my guiding was better than it has ever been before!

The seeing conditions were poor according to Astropheric yet I had:

- a 45 minute run at RA/DEC = 0.52"/0.52,
- a 90 minute run at 0.48"/0.48",
- a 60 minute run at 0.61"/0.71", I'm guessing the seeing was getting worse but don't really know.

What I do know is I have never had RA guiding numbers this low consistently...typically they are 0.9" to 1.4" with Dec numbers at 0.5-0.7", hence my oblong stars.

Also, my 10.2 second harmonic contribution from the motor gears was anywhere from 0.7" to 1.3" before and now it is barely visible.

My Dec backlash is also reduced to around 650 ms and I think I can improve on that.

My research on whether doing the belt mod would improve my guiding mostly said it would be quieter but only little improvement on guiding, so I am very pleased with this conversion.

Interesting. I have read differing opinions on whether or not Belt mods can or will improve guiding, but I will say that most people agree with what you are saying.

Where did you get your kit from?
