Orion Electronic Motor Drive Question

#1

Post by Refractordude »

I really enjoy the planets and moon at high magnification. At high mag objects move out of view to quick for me to enjoy fine details. Has anyone tried this tracker on a Orion Skyview Pro or Celestron CG-4 eq mounts? Thanks to you all.

The motors for the SkyView Pro are Excellent!!!!

The CG4 ones are not the best, no clutches, funky mounting in my opinion.

Well, I put one on my CG4 and it works OK. Used it for the 2017 eclipse and tracked fine. And it has clutches, allows for the manual slow-mo to work too, but you have to de-clutch. However, long exposure is rough, probably because my CG4 has seen hard times more than a motor drive problem.

If you want the enhanced version get the Skywatcher EQ-3/2 motors, they are the same kit but has a better hand controller and if you can find them in the USA the Skywatcher are usually cheaper.

The motor you have linked to is for a EQ-3 and will rotate the mount at the wrong speed and either track slightly slow or to fast.

What do you think/know about the EQ-2M?

That is for a EQ-2, you need motor(s) for a EQ-3/2 or CG-4.
The mounts have a different tooth count on the gearing so you need to use the proper motor to get the correct speed.
The Skywatcher EQ-3/2 is the same as a CG-4 and is not either a 2 or 3 if you are misunderstanding.

Which tracker should I get for the Orion Skyview Pro eq mount? I really do not understand. It seems the 2m has better speed control than the 3m.

Yes the ones Ylem has linked to are the ones for the Skyview Pro.
The 2M is for a EQ-2, the 3M for a EQ-3
