Mounts Are Like Telescopes

#1

Post by 515bonner »

Mounts I guess can now be considered as telescopes when it comes to weather....
Yesterday I recieved my CEM40 mount. Put it all together, did a prelim altitude adjustment and put on the weight and 6" Mak for starters.
Did all the prelim test runs indoors since it was still daylight. Everything hooks to the laptop just fine...iOptron Commander and i Polar camera were all found.
Now I have to wait, and wait and wait to actually go outside and use it! Like the subject reads.....and here is my forecast. Look like Friday will be first shot and trying it out.

Yeah, you guys are really getting dumped on just north of me.

I ordered some spare dust caps once and paid for that with two weeks of clouds.

Don not feel bad. I traded my CPC 1100GPS for a Skywatcher 180 Mak Cass and a C11 in Carbon Fiber straight up. I have just one mount a CGEM II and I ordered a Ioptron IEQ 30 which I will have on Wednesday mainly for the Sky watcher Mak but will try the AT 152 on it some as well.

Oh Rob,

It is so much more pervasive than that! Buying any new equipment is a given for days of cloud cover this extends to even the set screws in your diagonal. Any repair performed on your Astro gear will generate days of cloud cover. AND If you even think about doing a repair on the shelf that holds your telescope, or you align your laser collimator, or you level the ground on to which you will set up your mount, even these activities will generate days of cloud cover. It is condensation without representation!!! There needs to be a revolution.

Glumly,

I hear you Rob... I woke up this morning; the long range looked good for Mon/Tuesday. I spent the better part of the day modifying an old reflector. My forecast now? So much for Monday and Tuesday...

It can be a vicious cycle. Clouds outside, boredom inside, buy/fix/clean telescope stuff which brings more clouds; wash, rinse, repeat.....

On with the revolution!

We share your pain. In fact, for our local club newsletter, I interviewed one of our leading photographers and I learned a bit about selecting hardware. We generally do not understand that the telescope is three systems: the optics, the mount, and the tripod. My subject is a mechanical engineer. So, he went out and found the astrophotography optics he wanted and the mount he wanted and the tripod he wanted. He did not go online and click the magic gimme button for a pre-selected package.

You did the same thing, actually, choosing the mount and then - sigh! - being put off by the weather. Still and all, the selection of the mount is a story worth sharing. Thanks.
