Celestron CGX-L RTC Battery

#1

Post by UlteriorModem »

I decided to check the battery for the RTC (Real Time Clock) that is in the CGX-L and I assume the CGX as well. I could not find anywhere where this battery was located. All that I found was Celestron stating that is uses a CR2032 lithium battery.

I looked at the mount and decided where would be the most likely place for the battery to be. I got lucky and found it right off.

Here we go :D

The battery is located on a board under this cover, the part with the CGX-L printed on it. There are 5 small phillips head screws to remove.

Once removed the cover has a pc board screwed into it. Pay special attention to the two smaller connectors at the bottom. They have the same pin configuration but the cables are two different colors. The 'green' one goes to the right. I always take a snap shot of this kind of thing for later reference. But still no sign of the battery!

Remove the 4 screws holding the pc board in place and walla! there it is! Use a hobby knife point to lift the battery out it pops right out of place.

Mine measured 3 volts with no load so it was still 'good' after a couple of years and a lot of temperature cycles. But since I had it apart went ahead and replaced it anyhow.

Just put it all back together make sure to get the two smaller connectors in the right sockets. Be careful when putting the cover back on the mount that you don't pinch the cable.

At least they did not solder the battery directly to the board like they used to do.
That always became an event when it was time to change one out.

I was worried that might be the case. But nope. It's actually one of the better coin battery holders I have come across.

And they chose a very common battery to boot :D

There is one in the CGX, but likewise, I don't know where it is!

I'll have a look in the autumn when it's two years old!

It is most likely in the same place. The two mounts are almost identical except for the size.

My RTC on the CGX kept going back to the original set date. As mentioned above on the CGX-L, the battery is in the same place on the CGX mount.

It also is a CR2032 3v battery.

Hello Micbaker.

Your battery will be fine for ages if it's new! The RTC default setting is strangely set to not remember the time you enter when you set the CGX up! You have to go into the menu system and switch on the RTC using the hand controller. I can't remember where that is in the menus because I've just got up! Post back if you can find it or I'll look it up tonight when I get in.

Welcome to the forum.

Regards

Graeme

RTC was on prior to replacing the battery. Oh well, I should be good for some time now. :observer:

If you replaced the battery it will default to factory defaults. As in RTC off.

Time to check the settings again. Since I now have a Starsense for my CGEM II I will have to check and see if the RTC is off in that controller. I will also be looking for the Battery for that mount too.
