Seems like my older CG-5 ( ASGT ) has a slight jump in the DEC gear. This probably happened when I forgot to turn it off during the solar eclipse a few years ago, and it went past meridian.
While observing it is hardly noticeable, but when imaging it is an issue. So, I can send it back to Celestron for repair or I can send it to a company and have it Hyper tuned, also the most expensive option, but maybe the best for long term use.
My question is, has anyone used the Hyper tune service and if so, how do you like it? Is it worth the cost? Any other ideas to make ti a better imaging mount? I use this mount for small reflectors like a 114mm and -70mm- 120mm refractors.
I have read extensively on it, but I have yet to pull the trigger on doing it for my AVX mount. The reviews that I have read are generally very positive, but there are always a few disgruntled folks. I would call the company and pick their brain over what their service will improve (over a factory service) as it pertains to your specific mount. If your mount worked well before the mishap, then maybe just a "factory service" is all you need. If your mount displayed significant RA axis issues before the mishap then the hyper-tune may be the way to go.
Sorry, I can't be more definitive.
Cheers,
JT

Searching the skies since 1966. "I never met a scope I didn't want to keep."
Update... I received a reply from a HyperTune Service, DSP, and they told me if my RA or DEC gear was actually damaged, they could not fix the mount. Getting parts from Celestron is difficult.
Then three days later, at 11:59 PM, on a Saturday, Celestron replied to my email. Standard repair service is $150 plus shipping. However, depending on what's broken the cost could be higher. They will send me an estimate. So I am going to send the mount to Celestron for the estimate. My CG5 has been an excellent mount and fixing it is probably the best option since replacing it would be the most expensive option. We will see.
I use my CG-5 on a regular basis, many years ago I bought the parts to do the hyper tune myself, it is quite easy to do and another option.
The www.astronomyboy.com website has an excellent disassembly tutorial if you wish to give it a try.
