SkyQ Link or Bluetooth?

#1

Post by Chich »

I have been toying with getting a SkyQ Link WiFi module for my mounts (SE & AVX). Then I came across the Bluetooth to Serial adapter below.

I would like to use various programs to control the mounts (stellarium, skyportal, Gpredict etc). If I am right, the SkyQ limits your control software options? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyone have any experience going the Bluetooth vs SkyQ WiFi route?

Thanks
Chich

Are you planning on "talking" to your mount via your smartphone or your laptop? If the laptop, is it Bluetooth capable?

Cheers,

I'll give my experience, I've had 2 of the Celestron wifi dongles and a SkyQ. All three had dropped connections more times during a session than I wanted to put up with. I bought the SkyBT and couldn't be happier with it.

Wifi- Better range. If using a laptop where there's wifi internet you have to pick between controlling the mount or internet access.
BT- Range may not be as good, but it's generally stable and you don't lose wifi internet capability.

Personally, I tried both wifi and BT. BT worked so much better for me, I ended up integrating a BT adapter into my controller.

I had not heard of the SkyBT before this. I've read up on reviews and it certainly seems to a better option.
Thanks for all the feedback.
