Not the mount, but the tripod

#1

Post by FerrariMX5 »

For those who have successfully tried this and understand the vintage tripods and their flaws.
For s short period of time, during the transition from tasco, there was a Nexstar 8.
Vintage 2001-2002.

The tripod was aluminum and many of you will remember the plastic pieces that held the three legs together and how they attached plastic to aluminum with with regular, short, phillips-head tap screws.

Okay, so 18 years have not been favorable to the stability of this tripod and I want to rebuild it.
Here is what I would like to have.
1) Model number and manufacturer of tripod.
2) Parts break-down.
3) Source of related replacement parts.

Reality is none of that will be available, but this is a diverse group, so I am putting it out there.

So, here is what I plan to do and I need to be stopped before I really mess things up.
I will disassemble all associated parts then fill in the plastic so I can re-create the holes.
I plan on using super glue gel, reinserting all of the plastic pieces into the aluminum sections to hold them together permanently.
Then re-attach all of the screws.

Also, the way the parts tray attaches leaves a half an inch of play to slide left to right.
This gap will be taken up with rubber washers . This should add some rigidity to the tripod.

Apparently this tripod was discontinued in 2002 and replaced with the much stronger (Round) support legs.

I may consider buying a newer tripod, but I do not want to break my fixed income.
I figure, I can afford super-glue-gel to hold the framework together (Does not affect the adjustable, sliding legs at all)

Any suggestions?
You can PM me if you would like, but once I pull out the super glue, there is no looking back.

Tony

From the images I looked at it seems the aluminium legs are the same as the ones being used today so you could swap a set if you can find a new set.
These are mass produced in a factory somewhere and replacement parts as such have never been offered from what I have seen.

I wrote an article on how to stabilize these tripods for about $20. I will post it in a bit when I locate it.

Check this vendor's inventory periodically and see if anything he has comes close. His stock changes all the time.
