My first attempt, the M42 nebula
Skywatcher evostar 72ed and an Altair 183m, momochrome
I’ve attempted to process the image with gimp

It's definitely there!

It is helpful when you post an image to tell us a bit more about how you acquired the image. Things like any focal reducer you may have used, any filters used, how long each sub-exposure was, how many sub-exposures were acquired, maybe the gain, whether light pollution was bad, what night(s) you took the image, maybe the gain you were using, etc. With all that we can better understand what the image is and why it is that way - and if you want suggestions we'll have a better chance at being helpful.

Hello Mack. You really got it with your Evostar 72ed and Altair 183m. Excellent contrast and a fine M42 (Orion Nebula) image. This is a great first attempt on a DSO capture Mack, and thanks for putting this up on here on the TSS forum.

Do you have a driven mount? One is not a prerequisite for deep sky photography but it helps.

I don't and the longest focal length that I use is 300mm.
