The best astrophotography scopes for beginners?

#1

Post by PapaFox »

This came from Forbes, https://www.forbes.com/sites/billrobers ... a4e882f2e8

Can't say I agree with all his choices, some may work if all you want is a "snapshot" of the night sky. Fails to address pro's and con's of each (i.e. alt-az vs eq)

I think all here would agree, do a lot of research before jumping in to astrophotraphy.

I agree. The writer did a really poor job.

Even though some choices could be made to work very well, there were none of the nuances explained, no attendant equipment needs pointed out or explained, and no pros and cons to each.

Some of the choices are/were particularly bad.

That's just about the kind of astrophotography article I would expect from a "Car and Bikes" contributor. Also, the disclaimer: "If you buy something using a link on this page, Forbes may receive a small share of that sale." doesn't bolster my belief that these were unbiased telescope selections.

Can't say I agree with any of his choices. The only equatorial mount in the entire group is a hand wheel driven EQ1 or EQ2. Maybe a snapshot of the moon through most of them but not exactly astrophotography as we see it.

There's your problem.. A writer

The list is pretty bad,a sct with no focal reducer, the 11"sct has a 2800mm focal length-good luck getting a photo with that without an off axis guider, Ignore Any fundermentals about snr and f ratio, tracking, alt az field rotation. No idea, if you're new to the game, ignore anything from forbes and grab a wide field lense a tripod and take some 10sec exposure of the milky way or andrometer, you'll have better succes then using anything posted in that article
