Geomagnetic storm.

My electronics like my TV are doing some weird stuff. I think a geomagnetic storm just hit. According to space weather, one might be hitting today.

It actually was snowing here earlier. It was weird.

OK, it’s affecting my Bluetooth, as well as my dad‘s car‘s Bluetooth. According to my father, NASA said that it is a G2 storm.

My TV is still having problems. So is my Internet.

So this is a geomagnetic storm. Fascinating.

It's possible. As the magnetic field lines of the storm reconnect with the Earth's field, energy is dumped on the region at the bottom of those field lines.

So it's entirely possible for significant EM energy to affect only one region of the globe.

How do the times of the effects you are observing match up with the UT times on Spaceweather.com?

The times don’t exactly match, but they are pretty close. I looked at the data I recorded yesterday on the 11th, and it looks close, but the times don’t exactly match. I could’ve converted time zones wrong, who knows? I am in US Mountain Time.

Anyway, I’m not having any of the previously mentioned issues anymore. I think that was the storm. Who knows?

A geomagnetic storm can induce currents long conductors, like power lines (1989 power outage throughout Quebec) or like telegraph lines and station fires (Carrington Event 1859). When the CME (coronal mass ejection) hits the Earth’s magnetic field it quivers like a bowl of Jello. Moving magnetic fields across a conductor induces current just like a generator. Absorption in the ionosphere at HF (high radio frequencies) (3-30 MHz) can increase, the quivering can modulate HF signals causing distortion. The following auroras can reflect radio signals. However, I know of no known method that a geomagnetic storm can effect short range, directly propagated radio signals like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc. Most likely any effect perceived was just a coincidence.

I can't comment on the effect on electronics. It can happen, but I don't know if it did happen with this storm.

But I have been seeing some awesome aurora photos from the western Canadian provinces from Monday night. Apparently, it was truly spectacular.
