Coronal Mass Ejection?

Hi everyone,

I’m not sure where to post this, so I’m posting it here. Perhaps someone could help me figure out where this should go.

I was on spaceweather.com, and I saw news about a coronal mass ejection. I’m attaching a link to it.

I have one question, what can a coronal mass ejection do to earth? Will we be affected by it if it hits?

Can someone help me understand this?

They can create geomagnetic storms, disrupt HF radio communications, induce currents into the power grid, and cause auroras. Big geomagnetic storms can produce aurora much further south than normal.

But they have to be of sufficient magnitude and they have to be directed straight at us (both not common) otherwise they are just solarhead photo opportunities!

And IIRC the orientation of a CME's magnetic field is also a factor although I can never remember which direction is good for us and which is bad.
