ordered a tamron 18-200 VC canon model lens any use for astronomy?

or would the results be devastatingly bad?

also another question how good would it be for video? manual focus video? auto focus video?
does stabilization work in video mode?
is focusing quiet or loud?

I do not have any specific knowledge of that particular lens. However, a zoom lens like that, in general, should be very useful for astronomy. At 18mm you could use it for constellations and widefield and at 200mm you can use it for some deep sky, lunar and simple planetary. I use 3 zoom lenses: 18-55mm, 35-80mm and 75-300mm, I have historically done most of my photos at 18mm and 300mm but have recently started to explore the middle ground.

All equipment has its good points and limitations but IMO, unless you have heard bad things about this lens, go for it!

I used to have both an 18-55 and a 55-250 but both had drawbacks and bothered me in various ways.
minimum focus distance way too far away on the 55-250 lens. and then it broke.
18-55 had crazy mega loud autofocus. like a machine gun going off. super loud plastic gear noises
and the image stabilization quit working on my 18-55 lens.
then it start getting some kind of liquid INSIDE the lens that wouldn't evaporate or go away. couldn't fix it. :( it just spontainously appeared. maybe bugs crawled in? :(
and the 55-250 just plain broke probably from manufacturing defect. so i dont have those anymore.
thats why im getting 18-200 lens. its all in one. ACTUALLY USEFUL zoom range. image stabilization. and i read/heard the autofocus is fairly quiet. so manual focusing should also be fairly quiet too. should be good for general use too not only astronomy

Only thing is I read its quite soft so may produce bloated/large blurry/fuzzy stars especially near the edges.
so might not produce the sharpest star pictures unless tracking with a long exposure and a low iso to reduce noise to minimum for alignment and stacking to even work.
also might need to use some raw software to correct the distortion if its really bad.

Yes, I think the fixed focal length lenses are usually better but tend to be a lot more expensive.

The fact is we are all learning and most of us only have a limited budget to work with.

I have the Tamron 70-200 G2 2.8 and I use it for both landscape and astro. You should be fine with the lens you have chosen.

This was taken with the Tamron 70-200 using a Canon 6DmkII
