Infared telescope

#1

Post by Michael131313 »

I did not know where to post this, so please move at your discretion.

Like all of us we have a lot of cloud cover, so I wondered if anyone had thought of a infared devise? I looked it up and it seems very limited from earth and costly.
Here is what I found: Affluent amateurs potentially can work in the near infrared (0.7 to 1.7 or 2.4 um) from many places in the U.S., at a cost of maybe 15-25,000$ for instrumentation to mount on their telescopes (assuming the telescopes are the right optical design).
Just Wondered...….,

OH, I have so many other pieces of gear to acquire before I can even think about going down that path... Besides, IR is not as good as you think at peering through a moisture-laden atmosphere. I know this because I used to work at FLIR and have used many different types of IR sensors. Neither NIR nor FIR provides an image that looks like nothing is in the way.

Cheers,
JT

It's not a good idea unless your humidity is low and free of clouds anyway. The reason being that even on cloudless nights water vapor has strong absorption in the infrared.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro ... n_by_water

If you are located at high altitude with very low humidity you might consider it. But clouds will get you anyway.

I always wondered about when individuals would be able to get their own radio telescopes. Don't these see through moisture?

Thanks much for the link. Very cool.I learned a lot reading about that scope. Has anyone had any experience with it? However, I could live about two years down here on what it costs.

I would rather get a TMB 203mm f/9, they would be the same price! A Questar would be alright as an alternative though.

IR, with the exception of the sliver known as near-IR, is absorbed by the water and it won't let you see through clouds.

You may want to consider radio astronomy, and you will find a small but active hobbyist community involved in it.
