Default Sky chart option - can I turn it off??

#1

Post by TSS_ASTRO »

Hi all,
In the interactive atlas and charts feature - there is an option that is on by default - which controls the display of stars etc - on the chart
The idea is to simulate what one would probably see at the given time one is looking at the chart.

So if I run the program in the middle of the day - wanting to make a chart for a certain object, I may discover the chart is missing things.
It may in fact not display much of anything.

My best option for capturing a usable chart - is to go to a specific objects info and look at that object's yearbar which displays the best month/day to view that object. Select that month/day - then shift days to find a moonless time - and then go for the chart.
Now the chart will show what one would expect to see a chart display.

Does anyone know if this is an option I can turn off?
Sincere Thanks

It would help greatly if we knew what piece of software you were talking about?

The software is CDC /Cartes du Ciel / Sky Charts. I use it for printing charts. They're really good. The program is a wonderful sky atlas.

All I know are these possible solutions:

-     the menu Setup>Display
      and
-     the option Setup>Save configuration now

I save a useful configuration so that the program opens with that as a starting point.

The option Setup>Save configuration on exit is best not used. It is rare that the end of a session is a useful starting point for the next one.

CDC is a map. Stellarium is a planetarium program. To get a quick idea of what the sky looks for for my location and at any point in time I use Stellarium. If I see something interesting in Stellarium, I sometimes turn on CDC to make a chart to star hop there.

Two PDFs made with CDC:

Pleiades-mag-bino.pdf

and a CDC example of a finder star hop chart from Vega to the Ring nebula:

That's very clever. I have Stellarium, of course, and it is fine for what it is. To get a better view of what is on tonight, I settled on Sky & Telescope. (https://skyandtelescope.org/interactive-sky-chart/ ) But I also have similar links for the Beckstom Observatory (Flint, Michigan) and the Dudley Observatory (upstate New York). And they are fine for what they are, but not exactly... So, I will check out Cartes du Ciel. Thanks.
