*Celestron Astromaster 130EQ And Sony A6000 Camera*

#1

Post by Simpan92 »

Hi!
I recently got a Celestron Astromaster 130EQ, and i'd like to take pictures.
I got a Sony A6000 mirrorless camera and I was wondering if anyone could help me find the right adapter for it?
I've been looking online but I'm not really that good when it comes to stuff like this so I don't really know what I'm searching for.

Any help and advice is really appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi - I'm afraid it's very likely that you won't be able to get that telescope to focus an image on the sensor of the camera.

The design of a Newtonian scope means that the image produced by the primary mirror is inside the focuser, and unless it's a specially designed focuser, you can't get the camera sensor into the right position. Sometimes, you can use a Barlow lens that moves the image plane further out, and you might find that works, but it can't be guaranteed.

If you want to try this, Celestron make a Barlow lens with the t-thread

You can get an adapter for the camera , if you look for a NEX mount adapterlike this one (widely available) - but, as I say, it's not guaranteed to work.

An alternative to using your mirrorless camera is to use the camera on your phone with a mount that clamps to the eyepiece.
The Celestron NexYZ adapter isn't the cheapest, but it has a design that doesn't rely on you being an octopus ( ! ). It has an effective clamp, and fine control knobs so that you can adjust the position to get the image centred easily.

Hi, Thank you for answering :)
I will check out the phone adapter :) , but since it's a phone camera, will I lose any quality because of this? Or is it just better to get a new dslr camera?

Thanks Greenman, good to know that a Barlow will work with that scope.

Hi Simpan92, this means you should be able to take images with your camera using the Barlow and the NEX - T adapter I suggested.

I wouldn't suggest replacing your A6000 with a dSLR, as it has the significant advantage of being a lot lighter than many dSLRs.
(I have an A5000, and it's 1/3 the weight of my Pentax dSLR).

NB - If you can get a remote control for your camera, it will make taking images a lot easier.
