Can Someone Explain This?

#1

Post by Refractordude »

Tolerance of 1/36 ?

1:10 focuser ?

There are focusers that can allow for greater magnification with short focal ratio scopes ?

My 120mm f8 achro refractor can go as high as 166 magnification, sometimes to 200 magnification on the moon. At higher magnifications the image turns to mush. Can adding another/better type of focuser bring me over 200 magnification with a sharp image? Click the below image.

Thanks

This just means that it has a focuser installed with a fine focus knob. For every 1 turn of the coarse focuse knob, the fine focus knob turns 10 times.

On a faster scope such as this f/5, a fine focus knob allows for easier focusing, a better "snap to" if you will.

While a better focuser can assist with achieving focus, it does not alter the scope's overall ability to achieve focus at higher power, or rather, it does not add to useful magnification.

To focus or not to focus? ;)

What light through yonder window breaks?
Tis the East and I am unable to focus within the breadth of half a hair.
Alas, my viewing is undone!

You should probably go outside. Looking through the window is probably ruining your view.

No one mentions the optical limits regarding magnification?

Well there is one. I dont know enough to explain it all but telescopes have a finite limit of magnification which cannot be exceeded regardless of how good your focuser is.

The scope may not have the ability to deliver a sharp image at higher powers, due to optical quality, or you could be experiencing poor seeing, which manifests at higher powers. The focuser has no effect at all on the amount of magnification that can be used. A two speed focuser is nice, but not absolutely necessary.

Hey, I find around Christmas time most scopes sold out of department stores seem to have a very magical magnification factor!
It's a miricale..... Ho...Ho...Ho...
