Looking for an adapter from M42 to a 2" eyepiece

#1

Post by man1 »

Hi,
I have an old (very high quality f=400mm 1:5.6) camera lens that fits my Pentax Spotmatic-F and I am trying to find an adapter that converts from the M42 (screw-type) camera format... to accept a 2" eyepiece. Is there such a beast out there? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, man1

Thank You so much, that is exactly what I need The T2 version has the female thread already. The telephoto lens at the end is a male thread. I have tested an Orion Deepview 35mm combo with that tele lens and it works great.

I just ordered the part.... Thank You!!!!!

Cheers

You'll have to post your setup when you get your adapter, will you be doing visual with it? I think i seen a pic or two online with a eyepiece on a camera lense, i wounder what it takes to get it into focus,, i wounder if a low profile adapter will be good for 2" adapter ccd/cmos cameras

Sure - I will post some pictures. I have no problems to get it in focus (by holding both pieces flush together), when the T2 adapter is installed I will unscrew the bottom end of the 35mm Orion DeepView eyepiece. This will make up for the extra length that will be added by the T2 adapter. I am really looking forward to this, it makes good use of an old tele lens that other wise would collect dust. It works amazingly well, I will also try my ZWO camera with this setup. I am pretty sure that one will work as well.

Cheers.... Manfred

Well, my adapter finally arrived and as promised I have some pictures to show. The adapter fits perfectly on to the Tele-lens, my first step was to verify
the original eyepiece which was the Orion Deep-View 35mm eyepiece and as expected it works perfect. No issues at all focusing it! I set the focus adjustment
on the Tele to midpoint and moved the 2" eyepiece further out to see my adjustment range - it works great lots of room.
Having done that I thought giving it a try with the 10mm Sirius Plossl eyepiece that came with my XT10i, this one I was holding by hand, since that is a 1.25" dia.,
and this one worked as well. I will make an aluminum adapter to fit this myself. This one is easy to machine since I don't have to deal with the M42 thread. I have a lathe,
but the M42 thread was the show stopper to make it myself from scratch.
My next step was to check the adapter and see how it will work with my T7C camera. Well - the camera works as well and I am thrilled to have found some good use
for the old Tele lens. I was testing the camera using SharpCap - works great!

Again - Thank You for pointing out the adapter!!!

Very nice scope!,looks like a sturdy adapter.

Can your lathe not do metric 0.75 mm?

Yes, the lathe can do metric thread but I have to change the gears in it. The adapter is truly heavy duty and well made, it also uses a compression ring.
The 2" eyepiece is a beautiful snug fit.

Very nice setup!
(I'm amazed at how many of us have lathes...)
Perhaps they should be listed in the equipment section along with the other pieces of kit... :D
