Hexafoc focusers?

#1

Post by pakarinen »

Anybody have experience using a Hexafoc focuser?

If so, how does it compare to a "vanilla" R&P and / or a Crayford 2-speed? I'd expect it to be about in the middle.

Thanks!

Hexafoc is a variant of helical R&P focuser. A helical rack and pinion is a rack and gear set that has the teeth of the rack and pinion cut at an angle.

Helical R&P is my favorite focuser design. It does not slide under heavy weight like crayford do, and it does not have a backlash like classic R&P.

Hexafoc in addition to using helical rack and pinion also has a hexagon-shaped drawtube as opposed to round. ES/Bresser claim that this improves precision and reduces flex and slack. I don't know if this is for real.

In the past I had two ES scopes with older round drawtube version helical R&P focuser. They required some tuning out of the box, but worked nicely after that.

If you are planning on continuous use of large wide field eyepieces or cameras I would change the ribbed teflon strips supporting the drawtube for solid strips so they cannot crush flat over time.
Other than that a decent focuser.

My 8" Newt from the 70's has a Telescopics Helical R & P focuser. It is the best! It should be used across the board!

Cheers,
