With this setup I can find whatever I want in less then two minutes. In this video I kept moving the mount towards the target object. The best way is to just nudge towards the object, and wait a few seconds before each nudge. This will stop the object from moving about radically. Below is all you will need with a pair of no metal binoculars. Sorry for all the images. Left click the images.

The video and first two images are from the free version of SkEye. I just downloaded the pro version, which has twice as many objects in it's database. It is best to zoom all the way out. Find the object, and then zoom in until the circle is 1 degree wide. Then Nudge back to it to view with your binoculars. It takes no time at all.

Clever set up RD! Very interesting. I like that you are working mostly with off the shelf parts.

I have to look into that. The compass in my iPhone has never worked right though so I've yet to find an astro finder / pointer app that works. At least I assume it's b/c of my phone compass that they don't work.

Try checking the settings. My results using the iPhone compass were unsatisfactory until I checked "use true North" in settings. Since then I've set up satisfactorily.

For what it's worth: here's my review of SkEye from the software forum.
