Questions for binoviewer users

#1

Post by Bigzmey »

I am thinking of getting a binoviewer for Moon and planets.

For those who already use binoviewers, what EPs do you use? I mostly observe with manual mounts, switching EPs at high powers is a bit of hassle. I can imagine switching two at the time may not be doable with a manual mount.

Does anyone use two high quality zoom EPs instead? I already got one Mark IV.

I use the Baader Mark IVs happily. They are just a tad shy of the performance of a good orthoscopic of Plossl or Abbe design. If I’m going to spend a long time at one magnification I swap out the Mark IVs after determining the optimal focal length. I have doubles of the Vixen NPLs and Baader Classic Orthoscopics for just that purpose.

I only do this when guiding on an equatorial mount. I don’t think I’d do it on a manual mount based on experience with the Z12.

Mixed brand Masuyama/Astroplans Binoculars: Nikon Aculon 10x50, Celestron 15x70, Baader Maxbright. Mounts: Star Seeker IV, Vixen Porta II, Celestron CG5

I thought so. :) Initially, I planed to get another set of SLVs, but now think that getting another Mark IV is a more sensible solution.

What type of observing you typically do with binoviewer?

Most often it is lunar or planetary. Occasionally smaller DSOs with higher surface brightness like planetary nebulae and globular clusters.

My viewing with the binoviewer is the same as nFA, two eye viewing is much more relaxing over long sessions, especially when looking at fine details.

Well it might be. Neither my Baader Maxbright nor the 2" Grossfeld (when I had one) binoviwers had problems. I've never had to resort to having mine serviced but Harry Siebert has a great reputation. I'd likely go to him first after any warranty expiry.

A follow up question on Mark IV. It is rather fat EP - 55mm in diameter. How comfortable is having two of them in binoviewer?

Good question, definitely something to worry about depending on your own inter pupillary distance. The mean inter pupillary distance for humans is ~63mm. The extremes range from 50mm to 75mm. If your inter pupillary distance is less than 55mm then the Mark IV zoom is not the one for you. The Vizen zooms are more svelte. My inter pupillary distance is 73mm so I have no problem with the Mark IVs.

I had my binoviewers for about 6 years with no issues (a lot of air/ vehicle travel) until I dropped them and damaged a prism.
Siebert Optics did a great job of repairing them and doing the supercharge modifications as well.
I also purchased a few binoviewer OCA and Star Splitter, Performance+ and Planisphere eyepieces from him.

I use them, mostly for achieving focus. On SCTs and Maks I don’t bother.

You may need one or more different powers depending on how many telescopes you are using and the different focal lengths.
They typically come with a 1.6x which is close to a 2x barlow lens cell attached too the eyepiece.

Various combinations of mirrors, OCA or prism may be needed depending on the individual telescope focal length.

Anyone had personal experience with Williams Optics binoviewer? The reviews on CN are mixed. Baader MaxBright II would be my first choice but they have been out of stock for last few months.

No help from me I'm afraid. I read the reviews and decided on considering 3 vendors: Baader (which I've used), Denkmeier and Siebert.

I am reading on the forums that with BV models that don't have self-centering EP holders, but just one set screw (with brass ring or without) it is sometimes hard to achieve good alignment and harder to merge images at high powers. Any feedback on that issue?

Thanks.
Andrey

No, I've never had that trouble. I think that many folks have difficulties more because of slight variations in eyepiece focal lengths. Back when I was using Delos for binoviewing I had to buy triples to get 2 that were acceptable.

The WO are the same as my Stellarvue set, these are sold by many retailers just rebranded.
William Optics, Celestron, Telescope Service, Orion, Omegon.
They are all made by Kunming United Optics and seem to be the same build quality.
A good set to start out with to see if you enjoy them.
