Tripod Stone Bags

I just found out about tripod stone bags. I was searching amazon for outside painting stuff and came a crossed them. They should be able to work for astronomy as well.

A plastic grocery bag filled with dirt is free.

Well yes but it but it might not be suitable.
All of my tripods are probably considered light and cheap. Some of the trays I would not want to put any weight on. To suspend weight from the legs by other means would be a better way to go. The more options you have the better.

Barbell plate weights. Cheap. Add a nylon cable tie to go over the hook. Nice thing is they're flat and easy to store plus can be used for DIY projects when you need to weight something down.

Might try one of those bags for an iPhone holder when running Sky Safari. Or maybe some kind of sleeve on a pod leg.

There is a weight hook on the bottom of the center column of my camera tripod but it's spring loaded and is only rated for 10 lb. or so. I can load the rock bag down with a lot more.

I think that the only one of my tripods that has a hook is the one used with my binocular parallelogram.
