Cross Staff

DSCN1388.JPG
A few days ago I added some glow in the dark duck tape to the viewing surfaces of my prototype / testbed Cross Staff. I did take it out for a few seconds one night to test and it seemed to work and be and improvement.

I think it is wonderful that anyone takes the trouble to re-create these venerable old instruments.
I believe that the ancient arts should be resurrected to remind ourselves of where we came from more often.
They can still teach us a lot and who knows?
If all of our modern technology were to fail ( massive Carrington event?) we would have to revert to the devices that served us for so long in bygone eras.
So-who's up for a mural quadrant, an astrolabe, a transit circle and timing by pendulum clock?
Dust off your old sextants and calibrate your compasses folks.
We may call upon you....

Astronomy is like anything else. It's how much you want to get into it. Astronomy does have a history but it does seem like everyone is more interested in looking forward then backward. I like the ability to be able to do things by myself in fact I quite often find it a necessity.

Here are a few old photos take just after I got most of the work done on the one that I'm trying to make. It is still an on going work in progress.

To anyone else interested in trying to make a cross staff or other astronomical equipment I recommend the book Mathematical Astronomy for Amateurs by E.A.Beet.
I could not figure out his way of doing it in the book so I came up with another way using a protractor and thread.
