Got Four New Accessories For My 150mm F8 Refractor

#1

Post by Refractordude »

My 150mm f8 refractor is long. So I purchased an extension tube. I can now go to zenith sitting down on my chair. I still have to bend a little, but no back pain like bending when standing up. I could get the scope 6" inches higher, but then it would be to high to safely mount and dismount. The extension tube has also given the scope more stability. It is kind of strange, but some positions show no vibration at high magnification. In some other positions it is under about 2.5 seconds. Perhaps someone can explain the change in vibration caused by the position of the scope. The scope is very well balanced on the mount.

I purchased some vibration pads. Have not tested them out yet. Regardless I am cool with the under 2.5 seconds shake/vibration time.

I also purchased a new dielectric diagonal. I will take better care of this one. After an observing session I tend to dump my equipment in the two crates and head home. Two or three days later I straighten things out. From now on I will blow air/micro cloth though the diagonal and and cap on both ends right after the end of observing.

I have another stool on it's way to me. This new stool will give me an additional 8" of height. Hopefully I will not have to stand to observe low in the sky objects. The current stool can be used for objects at zenith.

Still thinking about a tracker for high magnifications. Has anyone tried/own the tracker for the Orion Skyview Pro eq mount? Right click the images.

The legs are shorter so less vibration when using the pier.
I am not sure what you mean about safely mounting and dismounting the telescope?

Hi Refractordude. I like it. I bought many of the same accessories for my 150mm f/5 refractor. A 2" dielectric diagonal, a pier extension, 9x50 RACI finder and dual axis drives. Your scope is coming along superbly and should give you a lot of fun on any clear night. Thanks for your nice equipment report Refractordude and also the excellent photographs.

Congrats RD! All are good upgrades.

If you are thinking about the chair I prefer this style.

It has back support, foot step and wider range of heights compared to the drummer style.

If it is to high I have a hard time balancing to scope in my hands to mount. It is also difficult to see the placement area on the dovetail. Another problem is looking at objects low in the sky puts the eyepiece to high. It is perfect at the height that I have it. I just need to get another balancing weight so I could add my RACI with the red dot finder. When pointing at zenith the red dot finder is useless. I just don't understand why an additional balancing weight cost $70.

A question for you. What is the highest magnification you were able to get on the Moon with your Celestron C6 refractor?

That wheelie stool looks pretty cool. I guess it means that you can look through your telescope AND drill teeth. Hopefully not at the same time.

Cheers,
