6.7mm ES82 vs 6.5mm Baader Morpheus.

Post by James1996 »

So I've been looking around for an eyepiece to replace my 6mm Expanse and I've narrowed it down to these two. Do you guys and gals think Morpheus is worth the extra money?

I have not used ES eyepieces but the Baader are excellent.
I am sure either would do well for you.

I have used the 6mm Expanse, tested a 8.8 mm ES, and still have the 14mm Baader Morpheus in my possession. If I keep them, they'd better be good. I even kicked out Naglers...

Both will do their job, although I find the brightness of the Baader a bit more outspoken. Very nice eyepiece. The ES has a shorter eyerelief.
Here a review of the Baader by William Paolini, a well known expert on eyepieces (not only eyepieces, for that matter)
https://www.cloudynights.com/articles/c ... heus-r3003

I'd recommend the Baader.
Refractors in frequency of use : *SW Evostar 120ED F/7.5 (all round ), * Vixen 102ED F/9 (vintage), both on Vixen GPDX.
GrabnGo on Alt/AZ : *SW Startravel 102 F/5 refractor( widefield, Sun, push-to), *OMC140 Maksutov F/14.3 ( planets).
Most used Eyepieces: *Panoptic 24, *Morpheus 14, *Leica ASPH zoom, *Zeiss barlow, *Pentax XO5.
Commonly used bino's : *Jena 10X50 , * Canon 10X30 IS, *Swarovski Habicht 7X42, * Celestron 15X70, *Kasai 2.3X40
Rijswijk Public Observatory: * Astro-Physics Starfire 130 f/8, * 6 inch Newton, * C9.25, * Meade 14 inch LX600 ACF, *Lunt.
Amateur astronomer since 1970.

The 1.25" ES 82° have very little effective eye relief (due to their smaller and deeply recessed eye lens). My lashes brush these eyepieces if I want to see the whole view.

ES82°.png (171.47 KiB) Viewed 3264 times
With my eye lashes getting into contact with the overhanging eye cup, little spats of goo end up on the lens and in the gap between the rubber and the metal. I find them very uncomfortable to use and there is no practical way for me to see the full 82°. Optically they are OK, not stellar, but decent.

The 6.5 mm Morpheus is better in every way: better ergonomics, plenty eye relief, more acute and contrasty, and certainly more immersive. Morpheus costs more but is well worth the extra money.

What about the 7mm Pentax XW it's supposed be real good how does it compare to the 6.5mm Morpheus? I really like the look of the adjustable eye-cup on the Pentax. Though it's $60 more money and $300 is all I can afford right now.

Hmm first before I buy another eyepiece I think I'll have to try out the ES82 11mm when the weather gods finally cooperate and see how well I handle it's ultrawide 82* field of view. When I used my brothers 11mm I liked it's improved sharpness and clarity over the Expanse eyepieces but wasn't sure how felt about it's ultrawide 82* field of view. I also only had my brothers 11mm for a single night I think two year's ago. I bought my 11mm when I did because it was the best eyepiece I could afford at that point and I wanted to try a good ultrawide and see what I thought. It might turn out that I don't get on with ultrawides and prefer a ~68* field of view.

I'm looking forward to when the almighty weather gods finally cooperate with me!

As an alternative to the Pentax XW, I would also consider a 2nd hand Pentax XL, even if with the smaller AFOV.
Some people rate the XL as optically better than the XW, and the XL are on classifieds for less than $200.

Just my 2 Euro cents,

I was finally able to use my 11mm ES82 tonight it's just as good as I remembered from when I used my brothers 11mm two years ago. I think I actually like the 82* field of view I'm just able to see the full field stop in my peripheral vision, it's a different experience to my 24mm ES68 or Expanse eyepieces. I'm now thinking I'll buy the 6.7mm ES82 and use the rest of my money to buy ether the 16mm ES68 or the 5.5mm Meade Series 5K UWA.

Well I just had the 16mm ES68 and 6.7mm ES82 eyepieces ordered for me. So anyone living in northern Ohio can blame the oncoming clouds on me.

Congrats! Both are nice EPs, great on DSOs, planets and Moon. The only issue I had with them was short eye relief.
